Something about the kernel being attracted to the dead, dying, or otherwise doomed. We haven't had a straight-up living Alpha Timeline player get prototyped. It might not even be possible.
I mean, you can't blame Vriska for playing it safe since she might not know the exact ins and outs of that shit. And you don't want a horrible double prototyping of two players since there's a chance they'll be incompatible and you basically wasted a resurrection.
I am reasonably sure that Dave's continuing Freudian slips are one of my favorite Homestuck running gags.

In those two cases, the sprite was touching its own player; It would seem that a player can't be prototyped into their own sprite, but that's contradicted by the existence of DaveSprite. Maybe it didn't count as a player being prototyped into his own sprite because the Dave that traveled back in time was not alpha timeline Dave anymore when he jumped into Alpha Dave's sprite.

What did the trolls use for the second prototype for their sprites?
I'm pretty sure they didn't double prototype. A second prototyping makes the Black King even stronger and they were already facing an incredible challenge with the powers of their lusii.
The only double prototype was ghost Aradia and the frog statue head
Which she prototyped so that the queen would be too disgusted by her powered up form to wear her ring
Johns was a double prototype. The jester doll and Nana.
And then Jades too. With Jade. Which is also a self prototyping.
I do not think there are ANY rules to prototyping at all. It seems right for Vriska to be worried. Not because it will happen, but because apparently anything can happen, it COULD.

So for optimal conditions, each player should only prototype one object, and said object should be as nonthreatening as possible.
You have to prototype something though, or else you get a dead session like in act 6.
I don't think we know what would happen if only one/some players prototype something.
