Once upon a time there was a man named Joe who had a very lousy job...

Joe Verus the Volcano is a 1990 film by John Patrick Shanley.

It is quite possibly the best Tom Hanks film of all time.

It has Lloyd Bridges, Ossie Davis, and Meg Ryan (in 3 roles).

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0099892/?ref_=ttfc_fc_tt

Go watch it if you can.

is it a cruel trick perpetrated by physicists seeking to taunt us

    mranthropy ...?

    @‌ronya

    Pretty much?

I haven't really used GME in practice, but you can think of it as a dual to maximum likelihood estimation. The basic idea being that GME tries to get you the distribution that makes the least amount of commitments (maximizes conditional uncertainty/information entropy), but fits your observed set of constraints.

hmm. I'd like to absorb the intuition here, but I'm not sure what the dual is being drawn 'over'. Like, I get what e.g. GMM gets you to commit and what you're choosing to minimize. With GME I have no clue. It's just a thing with fancy uniqueness properties but I've no idea what they're there for.

We didn't have the chat thread for a whole 3 minutes and I had to go off and click the policing thread.

    well, that was awful

there's been ice on the ground for a while but it's been covered in layers of snow to provide some sense of traction

today it was in the high fifties which melted most of the surface snow leaving just a thin layer of ice with just a bit of melting slickness on the surface

took me 45m to cover 3/4 of a mile and i still fell almost half a dozen times- wincing every time because a) i have broken my ankle more than once and b) i don't have the sort of job where i can work when not on my feet. and every fall fucking hurt because it was basically on to cement with an eighth inch of ice as cushion

never wanted a car more than right now

    fucking horrible

do they ever explain in da2 & da:i why the protagonists are immune to the darkspawn taint or am i supposed to assume i never get any darkspawn blood on me despite the fact I can't ever not be covered in blood from combat

Shameful pursuits and utterly stupid opinions

    those look handy ronya

i have big work boots with some tall tread but their weight still only really helps when it's slushy and they can penetrate- when it's solid ice like tonight they're not especially useful

these legit cleats might be helpful

Nordic Grip Walking are, apparently, the best cleats around.

    afp000472810-NKr3LmkwIm.jpg?updated=120220131024

fit shoes well and give a hella grip even on sheer ice (which not all cleat types will do)

if you want to go a notch or two above in price,

    http://www.amazon.com/Stabilicers-Original-Heavy-Traction-Cleat/dp/B009ZPVZRI

but it probably wouldn't be neccessary

EDIT: If you can find a physical store that sells ice cleats I would go there, and bring the shoes they'll have to fit.
