Here's a track from Gloryhammer's new album, due in a few days. I noticed the cover, which caught my eye, then the title Space 1992: Rise Of The Chaos Wizards, which got my attention, then hit upon this track.
Upbeat epic power metal with a healthy side of cheese. I think it's rather good.
From what I understand, Abbath was trying to get a trademark of the name for himself or something. Demonaz and Horgh said 'stop dat shit or we gonna sue'. The trademark company said 'yea man, stop that'. Then Abbath went 'FINE! I'll start my own solo band (with blackjack and hookers)'. Then Demonaz and Horgh were like 'well, if you're not gonna use the Immortal name...'
That's from what I understand. Messy shit (reminds me of what's happening with Sólstafir) but both Demonaz and Abbath are now making their separate albums so we're gonna get two Immortal albums next year, so there's that...
First Gorgoroth, then Queensryche, now Immortal...

I haven't really given it a go yet since I'm catching up on a few other albums, but I will give it a listen today for sure.

Saw that Steve'n'Seagulls band last night in a small club in Chicago last night. They played every song off their album, plus "Born to Be Wild" by Steppenwolf. They had a surprisingly high turnout for a band whose popularity is entirely thanks to their videos on youtube. There were definitely a few metal fans in the crowd (my wife complimented a guy in an Edge of Sanity shirt) and people sang along hard to their cover of "The Trooper".
I'm definitely glad we went, plus we were out of there by 9:45, far earlier than normal for when we go to a Chicago show. We live about 2 hours south of there, so we're usually dead tired the next day from lack of sleep. Not today!
One funny thing is the bassist said at one point, "OK, next song is from England! This is 'Holy Diver' by Dio!" I wonder if they've been saying that all tour and no one has corrected them that Ronnie James Dio was American.
Are the reviews going to be a daily thing at the moment?
Unfortunately not, but I'll be throwing up 2-3 per week, which is faster than I've been in many months. Next one is scheduled for Friday or the weekend, and they'll all be horror-related until 10/31.
Some of it, especially this song, really nail the rock feel that bands like Queens of the Stone Age try so hard to do. (And in the case of QotSA fall flat on their stupid fucking faces.)
I'm not sure why Deafheaven became the whipping boy of the underground metal scene, especially when there are plenty of other bands making bland black metal. I'm also not sure why they became so revered by places like NPR, Pitchfork, etc... It's definitely possible that one caused the other.
The album review does more to make me want to avoid the album than hearing that it is new Deafheaven
The mid-tempo centerpiece "Baby Blue" is a hypnotic Red House Painters sad jam that turns into a slo-mo Metallica ballad, complete with wah-wah solo. Clarke's closing line even evokes James Hetfield at his most desperate: "God had sent my calamity into a deep space from which not even in dreams could I ever imagine my escape." If that mix of styles isn't strange enough, doomy South Of Heaven-era Slayer somehow sets "Come Back" up for a Wilco-inspired slide guitar and a languid exit that takes a page out of Starflyer 59's lounge-gaze phase.
I want this person to feel bad about himself for writing this.
Edit: I listened to the Deafheaven. Not worthy of hate or scorn in my opinion. Not worthy of praise either.
Honestly, if I'm going to hate a metal band it's probably going to be something aggressively stupid like Dragonforce.
"Relentless double bass drumming, jaunty surf guitar a la Duane Eddy, the propulsion and grit of vintage Slayer, orchestrations reminiscent of the finest Russian composers. Gregorian chanting in parallel fifths over defiantly bombastic riffing drops into the sound of Jethro Tull on a psilocybin binge, locked in a garage with the complete works of Robert E Howard. Throaty vocal grunts turn to the dulcet tones of Simon and Garfunkel and back again, and back again and so on and so forth, before soaring into the distance across a battlefield strewn with pallid corpses."
I checked out that Deafheaven solely because of the controversy that seemed to surround them a bit ago. I found it fairly interesting but nothing groundbreaking I don't think. I did like the vocals, which is the aspect I was most afraid of being sucky haha. On another note, I have a new band which is comprised of two old bands and we have a bandcamp here: https://skullofoldsaul.bandcamp.com/releases some of you may enjoy it.
The drums are a little on the loud side and seem slightly alienated in the mix, but otherwise the new Satan album is pretty great, not as great as Life Sentence, but that would be a tall order.
I'd consider buying their album just because I like their attitude.
I despise how modern metal bands make their logos, it's not the look that bugs me (though making your band name unintelligible seems like a marketing misstep), it's the fact that everyone does the exact same thing. Show some creativity you twits.

I feel like if I press the A button this video will skip to a character selection screen where I can choose to be a dwarf, a barbarian, or a wizard

God yes.
I don't know if I'd say it's a side of cheese. More like an entire block of Velveeta.

I like the new Kylesa. It's not terribly metal, but it's a good record and worth a spin for anyone who has liked what they've done in the past.

This is... fine?

e: I've had a great idea: everyone write a review of an album in that style, and see if anyone can guess what album it is!

And it's obviously produced by Kurt Ballou.

The words "South of Heaven" and Wilco should never be uttered within the same review, much less the same paragraph.

Hey! That's my wizard space penguin!
I really really enjoyed that first song (disharmonic harmonicas anyone?). I wasn't quite as big on the other two though.
Also, a new Vampire EP, more atmospheric!

Nothing spectacularly new going on, but the whole album and especially the title track from their latest EP is everything I want from black metal at the moment.

Obviously the color was added by someone for emphasis. I'd never heard of the band before, so I looked them up and laughed again at this EP cover:
Their music didn't really do anything for me, but I gotta give them credit for finding a way to stick out.
