i watched a season of the bachelor once because the bachelor was the son of of one of my parents' friends
that show made me deeply uncomfortable on pretty much every level
Yeah, one of the things they talk about on Rose Buddies from time to time is how parts of the show are, at a very high level, pretty gross, and they're not 100% sure how to balance enjoying the show and talking about it on the podcast without being complicit in the grossness to some degree.
I wouldn't really consider The Bachelor more or less plausible than like
Anything else, dating-wise
you
don't consider a large group of women competing fierceley against each other for the affection of one person who they don't even really know at the start to be implausible

Reality TV isn't so much scripted as heavily contrived. They put just enough in to encourage certain narratives, selectively cast for the same reasons, and edit the hell out of it to create said narratives as much as they can. Editing unchronologically, intentionally leaving out out-of-character moments, etc.

it's a combination, and different shows use different techniques more or less
one huge thing that's easy to forget in the moment is that the interview sections were shot weeks or even months after the fact, and the idea that they're still that angry that someone overcooked their pasta or whatever the fuck is 100% something they're putting on

you have lived a very different life than me
I mean, first off
No, not really, that sounds about like my senior year of college
But I meant more in the sense that I don't see being on a show like that as that different than like
Meeting a stranger at a bar, or swiping right on Tinder
What makes one of those significantly more plausible to lead to a fulfilling relationship than another?

because the dude is assumed from the start to be a prize worth competing for
and at least on the season i watched some of those women were downright miserable during some of those competitions, competitions that he designed based on his interests and were like compelling them to do by the rules of the show?
but they were sticking it out because by golly they wanted to marry this douchebag
and the entire time i'm just screaming at my tv for them to leave and go open up a match.com account, no one is worth this much effort

You're not being paid in money and fame for either of those other scenarios, nor are you cast in contrived scenarios for the purpose of entertaining an audience and expected to act in character at all times.

I used to be friends with a guy that edited reality TV shows for a living.
He hated it. Because there are such reams upon reams of footage, and the producers basically know exactly how they want things to play out, so it's just a matter of him having to sort through huge masses of footage to find the scenes to support the narrative they wanted to tell.

I mean, I'd consider going on a date an act of entertaining an audience (my date)
And in entertainment, you are supposed to stay in character, and I would likely do so
Like, I guess I can see how the money could make a difference
But at least part of the theory of the show is that it won't, as he is aiming for the best personal match for himself, not the person who wants the money the most
The part that really rubs me wrong is when twelve virginians and an immigrant walk into a room and he eliminates them out of the line like he's picking out clothes
also yeah again the idea of 20 beautiful women shoving each other out of the way to be the first to dive on my dick is about as far from my personal experience as possible

There's a huge difference between going on a date with someone in order to make your date have a good time, and doing so in order for a third party to have a good time!
The second thing lies on a spectrum somewhere between creepy rich-man games and porn!

My guess is because it's launching with 50 characters, which is a stupid big roster.

Because by golly the picture they paint is fucking insane. I just about lost it when they were describing Pig Island
It's got huge problems, much like all reality television does
But I don't think that it is the most implausible way to find a romantic partner
There's a huge difference between going on a date with someone in order to make your date have a good time, and doing so in order for a third party to have a good time!

I think Jason said he likes how he plays, but hates "loves the internet" as a character trait.
He's wrong, but there's and upside there.
