“You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose. You're on your own. And you know what you know. And YOU are the one who'll decide where to go...”
― Dr. Seuss, Oh, the Places You'll Go!
It was really really hot today at work so my boss (see below) let me lounge about for a good portion of the morning taking pictures and helping her out in our main display pond. She went in to measure and clean out one of our Longwood Hybrid Victorias.
Victoria
The plant has grown even more since last time I took pictures of it. To give you an idea of the size of the leaf here is a picture of my boss in the pond:
The leaf directly behind her measures 6 feet 6 inches with a 6 inch tall wall.
She's floating that leaf with the flower buds on it over to me so I can pick it up with a pitch fork. The leaves are nearly impossible to handle due to them being covered in razor sharp thorns. You would start leaking like a sieve if you grabbed one, they are absolutely covered. The flower buds are even worse, both the stems and sepals have dozens and dozens of spines per square inch. Once I got the leaf on our golf cart upside down I took the above photo.
Hey Tofu- awesome shots. I always have a hard on for trains.
Also- best avatar ever!
So HUGE amount of photos alert! I went to the Daft Punk concert in Toronto last night. I've never taken concert photos before. It was dark, I didn't bring my special flash so I couldn't do my usual club photo thing which gives awesome results. So some of these are noisy- some of them are not as I was tweakin my settings, drinking beer ( i was very drunk so im suprised how well alot of these turned out) and rocking the fuck out to one of the best shows I have ever been too.
I have spoiler tagged them. There about 20.
opening and intermission dj's. They did a wicked job.
This is rapture. They opened. They are good.
* at the encore- they're suits lit up like kraftwerks.
I really like this one a lot. Right after the encore.
also- blurry comes from lots of people moving and dancing and the smoke from smoke machines.

I'm sorry, but you're wrong.
Even if most of them weren't blurry as hell, they're boring. You were entirely too far away, and there's nothing interesting to look at in any of those. It's ten shots of the same damn set and you can't see the bands or, really, anything interesting.
There is plenty of intresting to look at. We've all seen Daft Punk before (under a rock), and who wants to see photos of their robot helemts again? The real (visual) show was the 30 foot tall lighting rig, pyramid and crowd.

She's right. Mr. Brick, all of those pictures have a MySpace-y quality to them.
And no that wasn't a compliment.
Also, in concerts it is a really bad idea to use flash. Kills the mood of the photo right off the bat.

I really got to disagree with all of you guys. There are a few good ones in there along with the bad. Also- a properly used flash can make a concert shot sing.
For me, its about the size of the show, not Thomas and Ed's gleemin' helmets. What I find intresting here is the polar opinions I have found on this site. There are other places on the net that have really enjoyed a few of these. I don't mean to nerd it out in war here- but why is it that Daft Punk have asked to use a few of these photos for their upcoming DVD of the tour (there is a disclaimer and contact info out side of all the shows on this tour).
I fully realize that some of these photos are pure trash and blurry shit.
But there are a few that have already been sold.
I'm gonna leave this here.

I went to the Daft Punk show in Berkeley and yes it was the best thing in the world but it really only takes one of those photos to get the point across - it was crazy, big and they had triangle lights. That's all we're ever going to get from these images.

Look, the fact is, a photo means different things to different people. I'm glad that you were able to sell some of those pictures, but that is probably because they have a sentimental/commercial value for the buyer. It doesn't say anything about the quality of the photo in and of itself -- which is what we are judging here because we have no way of relating to the context in which they were taken.
From the perspective of a photographer, those photos are not interesting to me. Furthermore, some of them are just horrible -- they are a total mess in terms of composition and lighting, among other things. Now, if you want to get defensive and lash out at others for criticizing your photos, go for it. On the other hand, if you want to learn how to take better photos, assume a humble mood and listen to what people are saying.

Wait.
It is seriously an amazing plant. If you can go see one somewhere close-by, definitely do.

I had started with iso 1600, f6.0, and about .20 shutter time but felt it was no good. The non blurry ones are mostly iso 400, f6 - f8 and .40 to .15
like i said, i didn't bring my proper flash- how ever i think these photos are far from bad.

They're not even well-taken shots of the set.
