on the one hand, most games have little to no artistic merit, but then there's probably a thousand post-modern pieces of shit for every good piece of art
on the other hand, you can break a game down into its artistic components (design, script, music) and most certainly judge those as art
on the third hand, one doesn't dissect movies into their constituent parts when judging them artistically
so you've never heard of awards for best score? best costume design? best cinematography? wow

I am trying to absorb tfs' last point.
Ok, so to appreciate Combat, seph has to have an atari on which to play it in his house. Ok.
But Seph can appreciate Monet any time he wants by buying a plane ticket and flying to the museum that houses it.

Humor can be dissected as a frog can, but dies in the process.
There are parts of games that are art. A well acted cut-scene, original music, or art design are definitely art. Like with Gears of War. It's got a bunch of beautiful concept art for it, so why would it stop being art if it was made into 3D? It's stupid to say that because you can interact with it or whatever that it suddenly isn't art.

Can you enjoy the original music of Chrono Trigger to a high degree? Yes
Can you enjoy the scenes and events of Chrono Trigger to a high degree? Yes
Put them together and doesn't it produce a different enjoyment?
The song by itself on your cpu music player and
battling magus atop the cliff with the music going intently battling him with your spells and what not especially for the first time on your snes in the living room
on the third hand, one doesn't dissect movies into their constituent parts when judging them artistically
this is basically why i don't think games have matured as an art form.
t dru: you are being simplistic. there is a difference between awarding excellence in the individual aspects of a film and appreciating the interaction of the parts to create a whole.
whether you enjoy looking at it
enjoy pondering about it's meaning
enjoy thinking about the engineering aspects of something
thinking about the man hours that went into sculpting a statue

In that case a tree is a work of art. Or a puddle. Or the sun.
Those aren't works of art. Enjoying something doesn't make it art.
the "epic battle against magus" is little more than pressing a few buttons
games are closer to a sport than an art, if anything
but then, maybe sports are an art
and imagining a world in your mind when you read a book or the devilish acts a villain enacts upon another character when you watch a movie is little more than reading and sitting or looking
by your concept games are twice the art movies are since not only are you watching but you are interfacing

then what the fuck is photography
when people take a black and white photo of a tree or a run down house and it's published in a magazine about art photography what the fuck is that

if you're going to go ultra-purist with the definition of art, then art is anything man-made
so yeah, games are art
whether or not they are good art is the question
i think it's kind of implied that when people say art they mean high art
yeah, but I can see how making that distinction is friggin' pretentious
I can easily see why somene would consider this can of air freshener to be art- a lot went into the aesthetic design to evoke a positive, non-shitty air feeling

Can't we still hook Ataris up to TVs?
Can't we still display old games in other manners than the original console/cartridge interface?

not unlike someone who paints a picture of a man or woman and presents it to you
they are letting you experience their perspective with your own
so yeah, games are art
whether or not they are good art is the question
no
a photographer is letting you experience the camera's perspective
also generally photoshop's perspective
But now it's on pretty paper.
i think it's kind of implied that when people say art they mean high art
And how else are you supposed to work?
yeah, but I can see how making that distinction is friggin' pretentious
I can easily see why somene would consider this can of air freshener to be art- a lot went into the aesthetic design to evoke a positive, non-shitty air feeling
certainly not high art
you dont want to have a conversation with me you just want to spit on me because you don't like what i'm saying
so fucking fuck off i know you don't like me
I don't have photoshop
