***PC USERS READ***

Heads Up PC users, I've picked up the Director's Cut PC edition of Assassin's Creed and it won't install, thinking I was a one off I scourred the Ubisoft Assassin's Creed forum to find many a fucker who also had the same problem.

The Disc basically frezzes on install of a particular file - Jerusalem_forge.cab or some shit like that then soon follows with a "Data4.cab" file transfer error.Turns out it doesn't matter which version of windows you use, you can get shafted. No response from Ubisoft yet, and hey while you're at it Ubi, support the fucking 360 pad on Devil May Cry 3 PC.

Be warned, be oh so fucking warned.

Wikipedia Article

Assassin's Creed is a video game developed by Ubisoft Montreal and published by Ubisoft. The game had a worldwide release in November, 2007. On September 22, 2007, Ubisoft announced the PC version has been delayed until early 2008.

The game takes place during the near future. The player assumes the role of Desmond, a bartender who's family tree is of assassins. He is taken to a facility where he uses the Animus, a machine that allows him to see the memories of his ancestors during the Third Crusade, in the year 1191. Desmond assumes the role of Altaïr (الطائر, Arabic, "The Flying One"), a member of the Hashshashin sect (the original "assassins"), whose objective is to slay the nine historical figures who are propagating the Crusades. As the player finds and kills these targets, their conspiracy is unveiled. The player will be able to travel through three cities: Jerusalem, Acre and Damascus.

The interactive environments of the cities are populated by many people, and the way the player controls Altaïr affects how the bystanders around him react to his presence. For example, when going through a crowd, if the player lightly moves someone out of the way, it will not have a significant effect. However, if the player throws someone to the ground and hurts or kills them, the crowd may unite against him, which will also attract guards and he will then have to find a way out or hide. Similarly, if the player shoves a person aside, they may shove him back. If he climbs walls, civilians will gather around, attracting unwanted attention from guards.

The producers claim the environment is historically accurate. The locations in the game are distinctive models of the cities. All of Altaïr's targets are also historic figures who died or disappeared in the year 1191,although not necessarily by assassination.

Storyline Video

Wait, what's with all this other futuristic faggotry in this game

Yes yes yes, you don't always play as an assassin, but there are two plots in the game that you dart back and forth from, it's no big secret as the game does not start you as the Assassin immediately, it does'nt make much sense untill you play it.

So what do you do?

The main goal of the game is to assassinate 9 men who are involved with the Crusade, but getting to them is the main problem.

First thing is first, you're assigned with the target's name and the city he resides in, you can then travel by horseback, or warp there once you've had access to the place.

From here you must track down the informant at the Assassin's Beauro, they will provide basic information on where to start. From here you must search the town for the target.

By helping out civillians, eavesdropping, stealing information, punching the living daylights out of a crowd inspirer, collecting flags from idiots who drop them and climbing towers to observe the area.

Once you have completed enough of these tasks, you will have a lead to the target. How you take him out is up to you. Will you sneak in and stab him when he least expects it, or confront him head on? Make sure you have an escape route planned as once the heat is on, you will have to escape.

Sidequests Video

Where can I go?

The starting point for the game is Masyef, and from there you explore the kingdom via foot or on horse. The main cities are Jerusalem, Acre and Damascus, each with their own style and heritage.

Information about the real cities you visit.

Jerusalem

The City of Acre

Thanks to Fatty McBeardo for the history lesson on Acre.
From what I've read, it appears that Acre was contested and besieged several times. It was captured in 638 by the Arabs, and held until 1104, when the Crusaders took it. Then Saladin himself retook the city in 1187. It was besieged in 1189 and ultimately retaken by Richard I in 1191. The Knights Hospitaller were given control in 1229, and the city fell again in 1291.

When Assassin's Creed takes place, it seems to be during the aftermath of the siege of Acre. Which would explain why so much of the city is damaged and why there are so many bodies lying around.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Siege_of_Acre

I find this stuff to be pretty interesting reading. And not to mention it opens up a pretty much unlimited scope of possibilities for more AC material.

Something kind of awe-inspiring is that Acre is identified in texts from as far back as 1500 BC. If Assassin's Creed takes place in 1191 CE, then the city of Acre was already about 2700 years old during Altair's time.

Well there you have it folks, you can learn something by playing games about killing religious figures.

Damascus

What the fuck is free running and why should I care?

Free running or "Parkour" is an urban sport in which the players scale buildings, ledges poles, basically anything that is a structure and does it as smoothly as possible.

Free Running in real life video

Altair also free runs in Assassin's Creed, the animation system allows for easy transitions from roottops to ledges, to poles sticking out of walls. By holding the right trigger and [strike]jump[/strike] legs button, Altiar will leap, jump and bound from any object in the world, as well as climb tall structures

Sword fighting

The swordfighting is brutal and extremely satisfying. You need not push more than 2 buttons to look like a total badass. There are parrys, combos, counters, grabs, counter grabs and dodging you will slowly learn throughout the game.

Weapons include your hidden dagger, which allows an instant kill on an unsuspecting foe, your longsword for good old fashioned hack and slash, a dagger for fast crowd control and your throwing knives for a bit of long range death.

If you're feeling game, you can also bring out your fists. Go on.

Fight System Video

Socialising - Be a dick, get treated like one in return

There is a social aspect to the game also, if you treat the citizens of the town bad, they will treat you bad too. Running into them, hitting them, making them drop the items they carry, throwing them, killing them getting caught stealing from them or landing on them will arouse suspicion or even make them turn on you.

Piss them off enough and they will call for guards, throw stones are you, or get into fist fights with you.

So what do you do? Do things that are socially acceptable. Don't barge through crowds, make sure you gently nudge them out of the way. Help the right people and you can be aided with locals to block guards and allow you to escape if being chased, or allow you to blend in with the local monks to sneak by.

Ok, I just stabbed someone important, what the fuck do I do now?

Ok, you've been caught killing or you've done something illegal, the guards are going to chase your ass down untill you're out of their sight. The indicators at the top will tell you how you're doing.

Yellow = People are aware and will notice your actions, or you're in the middle of being chased and need to find a place to hide
Red = Someone has seen you and will try to kill you/hurt you in some way.

Hiding - You can avoid the guards by ducking into the small roof shacks, jumping into piles of hay, pretending to be a monk or sitting on a bench - which is quite frankly the silliest of the lot, but seems to work.

You can only hide if you're out of guards sight (yellow). Once you're in your hiding spot, give it a little time and eventually the alert status will turn green. If its completely white, no one is around to see you and you can easily go back to your business.

Jade Raym...

STFU and talk about the game! We get it, the producer happens to be decent looking, just talk about the damn game or go to GAF.

MOOSIC!

The music for Assassin's Creed is made by the fantastic Jesper Kyd, also known for his music from Hitman : Blood Money, Freedom Fighters, Brute Force,Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory the upcoming Kane and Lynch and Unreal Tournament [strike]2007[/strike] 3. The track consists of Gregorian and Moslem Chants, harps and guitars as well as instruments of the regions of the game. During Chase scenes, expect drums, bass and a bit of thrashy guitar.

As much as I tried to like this game (and there were moments of pure awesome), it ultimately just got boring. Doing the stupid investigations were repetitive, superfluous and unnecessary - filler to pad out a story trying to be too clever for it's own good. Doing the actual assassinations are awesome, but everything else is just such a grind. I had to force myself to slog through it just for the sake of saying I beat it.

In some ways it feels like Hitman in the middle-ages only in Hitman you were given a mark and a location, being creative with your final kill was what made it fun. In AC the cities and towns may look different, but you're pretty much doing the same crap over and over until you're "given permission" by the bureau to kill your mark.

Don't get me wrong, it was an experience. The free-running, climbing, and roof-bounding is awesome 10-ways to Sunday, the graphics were incredible, and the combat was acceptably satisfying. It just wasn't the game it made itself out to be.

As much as I want to get this, I'm holding off for now. It looks so good, yet the reviews have been pretty mixed.

What is the time for a runthrough of it? Would a person be able to play through it in a week? How are the achievements?

I have to say that this is a very well done game fortunately I did not purchase it. My roommate rented the game and I have had the opportunity to extensively play it. I love the personality and story of the game but its just way to repetitive. Jumping and killing can only be so entertaining...its like I am so bored of the gameplay but I absolutely have to find out what happens next in the story that I continue on doing the same repetitive tasks. I would recommend waiting for a price drop to those still not sure about it.

I think the differentiation of reviews validates my point.

I got to say, I don't understand the complaints about the story. The Crusades bit does get repetitive, but that repetitiveness is subjective. Some are going to love the game and keep playing around with the various attacks and stuff until the next big game (Mass Effect in 2 days for those unlucky enough to not get a copy until then!) comes along.

And that complaint is more to do with the gameplay. But the ACTUAL story is amazing and definitely exceeds my expectations for this franchise. I mean there is actually a solid trilogy unfolding here. I am totally pumped for the next game. Provided they fix a couple issues I don't want to see carried on to the next.

I do definitely understand the complaints of a few people who compare this ending to Halo 2 though, because it definitely leaves you wanting to play more, and is a total set up for part 2.
the whole ending where you can use the eagle vision is unbelievably well done. I'm amazed at how much research must have been done to make it that authentic.

I'll echo the 'neat but repetitive' sentiments.

I highly recommend anyone in the mood to buy it, rent it first and play it for a few hours. After that you'll see if your bored with it like some, or if you find it fun enough to keep going.

I think the one Assassination kill I'm most proud of was when I
Killed the target at the docks in Acre, the coward knight who doesn't believe. I can't remember his name
I killed him without even HIM being aware. All other targets I tried so hard to either do it quickly and suddenly or secretly and quietly but they just turned out to be a brawl most of the time. I'm playing over again to do a better job this time around.

I just want to reiterate what I said about Assassin's Creed in the old thread since it seems to be catching a lot of flak on page 1, and that's no fun! If you don't enjoy the game after the first couple assassinations, you probably just don't like the gameplay/story and it's not going to get much better (bummer!). But really, it's hard for me to understand that complaint when every animation, sound effect (Altair's voice acting aside) and vista in the game fills me with awe and inspires me to hack, slash, spy and climb all over the Middle East. The combat is so visceral and brutal I will never tire of pouncing on lone soldiers, just because I can.

PS: What's up with those shirtless crackhead-like bums who wander around and attack you if you get close? Between them and the begging women who literally clothesline you to ask for spare change, I wonder if Ubisoft was trying to get players to kill civilians.

PPS: I always kill them. D:

Between the beggars who have two whole lines of dialog they repeat, and the mentally disturbed folks who push you for no reason, Acre is hand-down my least favorite city in the game so far. It's actually quite blantantly annoying. It makes me want to murder civilians. Because, you know, if you get pushed, you must be an assassin - Even if you were just walking.

Anyway, is there anyway to preform an assassination from above? Or do you always have to walk up close?

I dunno... it's fun and all, but countering with the short blade is just nasty. The animation when you bury the blade into someone's skull you can almost feel the force used to pull it back out. It rocks.

I just finished Memory 4 (The 2nd group of assassinations)
So far the easiest assassination has been the 2nd Acre one, I just killed all the archers, waited for the meeting to end and the target was alone. Dropped down behind him and stabbed him in the back like a real assassin.

The pursuit was easy to evade as well, ran back up the wall and over to the mysterious haystack on top of the walls....

Either my guy grabs some ledge and dangles like an idiot while all the guards gather to kill me or I'll land a foot away from the target or, back to my Super Guard theory, they see me coming from behind, turn, and block me. From what I can tell, it can only be done from one story above the target. Lock on to him, then walk forward so that you're leaning over the edge. At this point hold forward, high profile, and armed attack, and you'll dive onto him and jab your hidden blade into his skull. (On PS3 it's forward, R1, and square; I think it's forward, RT, and X on 360)

Because it seems to have caught a lot of flak on the last page: this game is fucking awesome. It has more jaw-dropping animations, architecture, and climbing sequences than any game I've ever played. The combat isn't the most advanced in the world, but it's good, and you can easily ramp the difficulty up by limiting yourself to specific weapons (short sword or hidden blade). Anyone that enjoyed riding motorcycles off-road in San Andreas will probably like this game.

I should really finish the game up, though. Mass Effect is way too close, and once I get into that, no other games will be shown any love for a long time to come.

    That's... pretty fucking awesome. :^:

    Updated to "legs" button.

Speaking of legs I really wish it was easier to do the air assassination move.. So many times I would of been saved by the ability to kill some guy as I fell down to him from above.

I've nearly given up on jumping down on people. Either my guy grabs some ledge and dangles like an idiot while all the guards gather to kill me or I'll land a foot away from the target or, back to my Super Guard theory, they see me coming from behind, turn, and block me. Seems just running at someone works much better (if not as cool looking). :(

Thanks. Maybe that's my problem. I think of it like a running jump onto the guy from above so am usually across the street or away on a roof above (at an angle) and then lock-run-jump-attack. It does work sometimes but more often than not, fails. Also, I keep running into targets that seem to have a sixth-sense and as soon as I lock on (from a distance!) they know I'm thinking of attacking them and they run to me. Hrmph.

I definitely have quibbles with the controls and AI and wouldn't mind a few more various types of things to do but all in all an amazing experience of a game. I'd love to see them apply this engine to a more RPG type of game with real quests, vendors, etc. Even just one big city or a few smaller ones and a countryside with a more Elder Scrolls like approach -- would be awesome.

Locking on is probably the same as making 'eye contact'. Just don't lock on so soon. Lock on right before you about to pull his plug.

Not to mention it only works on unsuspecting guards which means that it's useless on the save the citizen missions... where you would actually want to use it often.. :|

Though wonky jump kill aside, it still is awesome to take out a whole group of guards using nothing but the hidden blade.
