what does that Trigger Maru overhaul mod do, maybe it will make the game enjoyable. I really wanted to get into it but at launch it just had some incredibly glaring flaws that kept me from being sucked in.

Silent Hunter IV had TONS of problems at launch. The 1.4 patch had fixed a lot of it, and the U-boat missions add-on has a few updates that improve performance. It's nearly a different game.
The Trigger Maru Overhaul is really an overhaul of the game. Textures, proper ranks and uniforms, sounds, sub performance, environment and graphics mods, AI adjustments, features brought back in from SH3, I mean, everything. It would take forever to list everything from the change logs.

Run Silent, Run Deep Campaign mod makes the missions more realistic.
“Run Silent, Run Deep, the Campaign†(RSRDC) is a major rewrite of the campaign layers of SH4 and is designed to overcome the following major “stock†campaign problems:
* The various stock “battle†layers (i.e. BurmaJawa.mis, BattleOfMidway.mis, BattleofGuadalcanal.mis, etc) are sub-standard, not only from a ship content point of view but also from a track generation point of view and in my view completely un-reliable from a game play point of view. The reason for this is that these layers are written in a “Scripted†format that is completely unreliable when playing in “Career†mode.
* The various Taskforce, Convoy, and Merchant layers that are total devoid of reality.
* The mission objectives are sub-standard and need a major rewrite
* The Special missions are also sub-standard and need work.
RSRDC solves all these problems
Both of these make the base game harder, which is something I was going for. We are going to have more dud torpedos and we are going to get fucked up a few times.
But with the 1.4 patch, it's a really deep and engaging sub sim, if you like that sort of thing.

I just got incredibly tired of every single outing being ended by one of the thrice-daily encounters with a random dive bomber that left my ship dead in the water or sunk.
Honestly I can't remember much of the game beyond that, because it was such an absurdly frequent threat. No amount of AA gunnery or frantic diving could save my ship from the legion of omniscient dive bombers that discovered my ship any time I was within 500 miles of the coastline. I probably encountered ten of those fucking planes for every enemy ship I saw.
