I'm watching an Anchorage news program and they just said that Going Rogue could set some first day sales records. Even factoring in the online price-war stuff, I find it hard to believe that it could be getting anywhere near a Harry Potter or Twilight book.
Never underestimate the right-wing think tanks buying out entire store's stocks, just so they can crow about it selling well.

So you're saying they're as bad as the Scientologists?

No I think the Scientologists are on higher ground on this one. They'd actually buy the books to say it sold well.
The right-wing nut tanks will simply say it sold well when all historical evidence says otherwise and if anyone points out that they're wrong they're labeled socialists, nazi's, acorn and other crimes against God.
On the topic of first-day sales: the first printing of Going Rogue was 1.5 million copies. Even if every single copy of the first printing sold on day one, it weighs in at about 10% of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows at ~15 million books sold on day one.
I hardly think that accusing the president of disloyalty to the highest ideals of the nation he leads can be called genuine dissent. All Palin has ever done is launch ad hominem attacks at her opponents, shrouding herself in a kind of aw-shucks, down-home "patriotism" that, in addition to its perilous proximity to outright racism, should be seen for what it is: a self-serving, cynical appeal to a part of the population she believes is too dumb to figure it out.
The reality is that Palin is apparently not particularly brilliant. She makes foolish decisions, is at times barely coherent, and apparently is divorced enough from reality that she believes those things are either untrue, or the fault of those "out to get her." Despite all that, she is possessed of a particularly malicious brand of cunning that has allowed her to climb out from under her considerable idiocy.
I doubt Sarah Palin is the kind of woman who can get elected president. I doubt she's the kind of woman who could be nominated to run for the office. However, many of the same things were said about George W. Bush, and it would be wise to remember that fact.
Thing she lacks that GWB had was is the solid backing of the GOP.
She has some grassroots but the bigwigs in the party must despise her at this point.
After how thoroughly George Bush destroyed the Republican party, the GOP bigwigs would be fucking insane to back her at this point.
You mean, not thoroughly at all, given how many Republicans are still in power?
The GOP is feeding on itself, engaging in loyalty purges, and losing seats that they've held for over a century. Rome didn't fall in a day, but it still fell.

The problem is there are no such thing as "party bigwigs" or at least they are so few that they don't really matter. There are some who are just playing at this insanity but they make up a very small part of the rank and file party officials. If you look up red state county GOP committees, its going to be stocked with teabaggers. That's why we keep getting "X County Republican Chair sends out racist emails/comparisons to the Holocaust/birther" stories. There isn't a clear division between the Republicans and Republican Party leadership except at the very highest levels and those levels can't act without county/state level support or support from the office holders who are also either de facto tea baggers or terrified of them.
Its an inmates/asylum situation. There's almost no one left who isn't a whackjob to be mad at the whackjobs.

They may not have a choice lest they be set upon themselves. The teabaggers were taking notes as to not only who didn't flock to Hoffman's aid, but also who got there later than the others.

A large part of it is that the scandals that occured in the middle of this decade, like Abramoff and ARMPAC, pretty much decimated the GOP leadership, creating a vacuum. Seriously, think about where you were in January 2005, and do you really think at that time, the GOP would have in 2008 a three way fight between Mittens, McCain, and Huckabee? A lot of these guys are punching way above their weight class, and that's in large part because they got promoted up before they were ready.
The other problem is that a lot of these leaders have power bases that may overlap with the GOP base, but are not of the base. Pat Toomey is a great example - being a leader in the Club for Growth, he has his support base from there, meaning that Ensign had few options for getting him of Specter's back, even if he hadn't been schtupping his mistress.
The compination of the two means that in many ways, the GOP is no longer in the drivers seat of their movement, which is not a good place for them to be.

McCain turned 73 before the election last year. Just for the record.

He still would have been the oldest person ever elected to a first term, and that's ignoring the chronic health problems and battle with skin cancer.

If I hadn't seen her before I would have sworn she was some meth addict who stumbled in frontof the podium.
What's funny is that Chance would make an excellent president.
