“Let’s all extend a warm round of applause for Mr. Vladimir Zukovsky and his fascinating presentation on motion detecting algorithms. Vladimir, thank you. And now we’re going to be adjourning for a coffee break for half an hour, after which we’ll be hearing the keynote presentation from Martin Vigil on the increasing likelihood of strong AI.”
The conference’s audience applauded loudly. Some of the weapons developers present seemed to be taking an extraordinary number of notes.
As the crowd dispersed to find caffeine, Martin Vigil crept up on the host, and slapped him heartily on the back.
“Brother! How are you?”
“The same as ever. Still twenty years younger than you, still in awe of your research.”
“Ha. Well, yes. Both of those are to be expected, if I may so say myself. Thank you for inviting me to present today.”
“My pleasure, I assure you. But, Martin, there’s something that’s been bothering me; I read your slides for today. This isn’t your most cutting edge work.”
“And? Zukovsky didn’t mention how his software can track individual insects. We’re all hiding something here. It’s the name of the game.”
“That may be the case. But you’ve never been able to lie to me, Martin, and I can tell you’re holding back something major.”
“I… well… can we speak somewhere private?”
The host clicked a button, and a wave of soundlessness surrounded them.
“Audibility dampener? I hadn’t realised that tech was portable yet.”
“Officially, it isn’t.”
“Never change, my brother. Never change. But… my research. Yes. I’m presenting today on the possibility of strong AI. But the truth is… we’ve already made it.”
“You’ve what? That’s illegal – Jesus, the ethics of it – and how do you even know you’ve really done it?”
“I know, okay? This thing passes the Turing test, the Chalmers-Searle battery, anything we throw at it. It talks like you or me. Sarcastic son of a bitch, too.”
“So… why haven’t you made it public? I mean, Jesus. This is major. Major. Really fucking major.”
“Because,” and here Vigil paused; “Because I don’t think we’re ready for it yet. If this thing got access to the internet, then I don’t know what the hell would happen. Banks would fold, stock markets collapse. Hell - these are the best case scenarios. The security just can’t handle it. We’ve already encased it in our prototype Internet 2 –“
“You still need a better name than that.”
“- I’ll work on it. But my point is that in a few decades, maybe, maybe the world will be able to cope with its existence. Maybe. And at that point I’ll let someone know it exists, and let them deal with the consequences.”
“Speaking of names, what’s this thing called?”
“Heretic; it spits in the face of God and all his natural creation. God gave us the stars, Heretic could give us so much more.”
“You are the worst person at naming things. Let me suggest an alternative - ”

Well I don't know if he actually did it, but this was the plan on day 1, REG Rysk was going to head one direction around the central core, I was going to go the other and we were going to try out the center. Of course I ended up a ZA spy and so had better use for my hacking anyway. I didn't get to move due to my untimely death so I headed into a corp server last night since there was no way to reach there first.
