Well, at least the end of Doctor Faustus has improved dramatically.
That was one hell of a 200 page sag in the middle.
I've always wanted to read that.
Anything that spawns an adjective deserves to be read.
This isn't the Goethe Faust, it's one by Thomas Mann. Really good; just, man, did it slow down.
I still have to read the Goethe Faust which is odd, because the whole Faust theme fascinates me. It is one of my top 2 "stories."
The Opera was fan-freaking-tastic. It was the first one I got to see and I traveled down to San Diego from Oakland to see it. Even though I didn't care for the San Diego Opera house much, the production was top notch.

The opera is for me in much the same situation--I've always been interested, almost decided to get a recording a few times, but never got around to it. Berlioz's Le Damnation de Faust is the same way.
My professor called me a loser because I refused to have a second girlfriend here in Japan.

I'm no student of his, I'd be more than happy to look down and tell him he's a douche and to go fuck himself.
I was just listening to a report on the radio about how sexual mores are very very different in Japan.
You 'aint just whistlin' dixie.
edit: though loyalty and monagomy are still appreciated. Japanese gals will often go for an american guy because (compared to the local boys) americans are faithful and kind to their wives and GFs

Yes,... yes, I agree. It's totally unfair that sober you gets into trouble for things that drunk you did.

That seems to be Mann's thing. If you're willing to slog through glacial pacing and lots of navel-gazing, you should check out The Magic Mountain. If you'd rather have the best of Mann's incisive eye, only condensed, check out Death in Venice.

I like to think it is wonderfully morbid. Like a jhonen vasquez comic...
I think I'll go shopping afterward.
I'm beginning to sense a pattern.

Was he, like, offering you someone?
Is he Japanese, if so that's par for the course.
Half my office has cheated on their spouses while I've been here and the other half wants to.
I know this both because they tell me and because they attempt to enlist my aid in this endevour.
