I finally found and plugged a horrible memory leak that's been dogging my project at work for almost a week

    Feelin' good about that!

Oh god that is the BEST

Also finding that one elusive syntax error that makes the compiler give you a billion errors or that crashes with a null value exception as soon as you run it.

    That sounds awesome.

What's your career plan? Cruise ship stuff?

Well again, I'll probably be gunning for Band leader soon enough, if not next contract, the one after that, since this is my first one. That comes with a nicer room and a nice pay bump. After that I'd have a lot less playing and would be more administrative, so I probably won't look to go too far up from there, if up at all from there. I'll probably only do this for a couple of years to get a nice money cushion and maybe buy a condo somewhere to cut down on expenses when I go back on land. After that though, I'm thinking of going back to my original career plan before I started doing this of maybe going for the U.S. Navy band to have a nice steady land-based career, or just going back to freelance playing+music directing in NYC or LA or somewhere like that.

Though for now, I'm loving this gig. I'll know it's time to leave when at some point during the day I don't go "Holy shit.... I'm getting paid for this shit. Awesome"

I mean today I had a crappy day for reasons totally out of my control and it was still an awesome day in the grand scheme of things.

I actually feel like shit right now because I didn't get any sleep and went to the gym at 5:30 this morning.

In like 6 months, however, I will feel fantastic because I will be upwards of 20 or 30 pounds lighter.

Things are looking up. I got my contract at work extended by 9 months, but for various reasons I might have to be unemployed for 3 weeks between contracts (something to do with transferring from one govt employment scheme to another). I also need to move at around the same time as I'm not getting any money, which is really very frustrating.

But on the other hand - WOOOOOOOOO, I HAVE A JOB FOR AN EXTRA 9 MONTHS

Went to bed with them in. Woke up with my eye swollen shut. Convinced I'd dislocated my cornea. Luckily cried the contact out.

My girlfriend, who has more education than me (albeit, not a lot more) is currently working part-time as a beauty consultant in cosmetics.

Granted, she's really, really good at it and enjoys the work, but she'd still rather be making more money. Just seems like this economy is still kind of sucking, even up here.

my dad's an eye doctor, he was telling me about 'hysterical blindness' the other day

It's a condition where people (predominately teenage girls) lose their sight because they're convinced that they've gone blind.

the cure is to trick them into admitting they saw something

which you can do by like throwing something at them or telling them you blocked off their 'bad' eye while actually blocking the 'good' eye and making them read something

and then you just tell them it'll go away in a few days, so it does

I had a number theory test last week. I was sure I'd done mediocre, I was expecting a grade around 65% or so. Today's class made me think it was even worse, as there were some things the prof was talking about that went totally over my head.

But then I had 73%! The average is 63! :D

I've always been terrified of doing this!

My driving is going pretty well, a man walked out in the middle of the road in a 40mph zone about 10meters in front of me and I managed to break steadily and quickly enough that I didn't run him over or give us whiplash - I am pretty damn pleased with that. What a bloody idiot though, I swore at him lots.

i am making progress on moving to berkeley, which is something i should do and want to do. seeing various apartments and stuff, spending some time there.

i am back in therapy (this is a good thing) and have an appointment with a psychiatrist to probably get some anti-anxiety meds, which i should have done a long time ago and which i am hoping will make a big difference in my quality of life.

and i spent basically all of saturday in bed with a really cute girl, which owns. also she lives in berkeley so, like, further incentive to move.

    ummmm

My big LCD monitor broke over the weekend (still got a smaller server monitor that i can use hooray for not being completely monitorless). I called the company up today and they're going to let me RMA it. So that's pretty nice.

My wife has an advanced graduate degree and went through a licensing program, and makes what I made when I started at my company 10 years ago.

I now make more than 20k a year than she does.

On a side note, anyone thinking that going for a psychology degree and getting into grad school means big bucks, you are wrong. Dead wrong. Like poverty wrong. Unless you absolutely love the work...because that's the only thing of value.

What you do is call him, and then wait just until he's got back home and call him again. He gets so cross!
