I don't think the thing is open to the public so I would imagine maybe 1. The Wilson thing didn't go over well though, so I doubt it'll happen again.

Oh, you've still got Bachmann in there, and there are a ton of freshmen Teatards.

I'm just waiting for them to class up the joint a bit with their witty commentary. I hope this time, Barack Obama responds with an expansive verbal smackdown.

I'm not one of the people who think they're just like their constituents. They know bad politics when they see them and heckling the president isn't going to go well.

I think the whole thing is going to go smoothly then the wharblegharble will pick up after.

Here's a silly question. Why didn't that goddamned "you lie" goose earn himself a censuring by the House? He is a Rep and not a Senator, right? How do you get off the fucking hook for yelling at the PotUS during his SotU address and get away with it entirely?

Hell, had that been done during Bush's term someone probably would've ended up in Gitmo for being a trator who loves the turrists.

More than one. Wilson got pretty popular last year and there are significantly more of them in congress this time around.

I dont' think there will be interruptions of that sort this year. Not after Giffords, not after the national blowback from Wilson. He might have gotten more popular in his district, but the rest of the place? Nah, I don't see it happening.

I'm hoping beyond what little hope I have left that the President will rouse me to my feet tonight, but I am not expecting it.

that being said, who's up for a good old fashioned IRC chat & Watch on slashnet?

Balance that with a significant amount of scorn from the rest of the country.

While he got money for it it sinks his chances at getting much higher in the party or getting higher office.

I really can't imagine this SoTU going heckle-free, given most of the freshmen were elected on the "REPEAL FARTBONGO" ticket, and they'd loose major cred if they missed an opportunity to make the President look bad.

Of course being heckled and carrying on would make the President look great, and the only people that will be impressed by the heckler already think Obama is the Antichrist/Socialist/Hitler. So this should be interesting.

Nitpick, but the Joe Wilson thing wasn't at the State of the Union. It was at the joint session where Obama addressed both houses on the health care bill.

It was already a pretty rowdy session, people hollering and waving fake copies of the bill. Still unacceptable, but not as unacceptable as interrupting the SOTU.

Ut oh. Apparently the main piece to the SOTU tonight is a 5 year budget freeze on discretionary spending.

I don't like this being in the speech. I think it is actually a reasonable compromise - R's want a freeze at 2008 or 2006 levels, I want no freeze. So it is actually a pretty fair compromise from my viewpoint. But this comes back to my big critique of the Obama Administration - tactics! It seems like every time we negotiate with the R's, the Administration offers a reasonable compromise as their starting position, as if the R's will just instantly see the beauty of it and go along. Instead, they negotiate to a point that is in between the reasonable compromise and the Republican position. Perhaps, had a truely Democratic position been offered at first, we could then negotiate to the middle, to the reasonable compromise. I just don't get it.

    Remember:
A $78 billion decrease in a planned increase in spending over 5 years. IE they aren't actually cutting spending they are making an increase in spending smaller.

Especially as it's last year's and not reflecting tonight's proposals. Though yes, I see the number does take a massive downward blip as we (plan to, and I actually expect this to happen) further withdraw from Iraq and begin to withdraw (this I'm less sure, but optimistic) from Afghanistan before continuing its habitual increase again.
