So, it's President's Day today, and around 2-3, I start playing Dawn of War 2, Retribution, and my ping and everyone else's is 2000-3000, I go to Day of Defeat: Source and check, latency in the thousands. Unless someone in my neighborhood has been screwing around with the land lines, or the workers that came today to paint a side of my house tripped over some wire, I need to figure out how to fix this. For months it feels like the internet has been getting tiny increments slower, like in Youtube where I can't put a video over 480p anymore without massive amounts of buffering. I have 300kb/ps, been trying to get higher, my modem is 5 years old, I think, we might have replaced it a year or two back. I just haven't had this problem before.
Another thing, for some reason my network I see on Network and Sharing center has changed from Linksys345 or whatever, to Network 2.

Edit: Nevermind, its fucked up again.

Edit3: It goes from good to bad in seconds.
It can easily be bad wireing, a faulty splitter, or simply your outside wires need to be replaced. While its happening attempt a tracert to google.com and see where exactly the bad hop is happening. (start run type cmd, or just put cmd in search in winvista and win7, in the command dialog box type tracert www.google.com)
It gets really low on 6:12.81.82.79. On 7 the first column is *. First column on 12 is star. (Still in progress). The *s start piling up 14-17, 14 and 17 having two *s.
14 and 17's *'s are in the middle and right columns.
1) are you using wireless or do you have a physical connection to your internet router? Something can be interfering with your wireless connection. Phones, or just your neighbour's wireless connection, etc. Also someone could be leeching your internet if they manage to connect to your wireless network.
2) Usually rebooting the router can help. Turn off your router, wait 30 seconds, turn it back on again.
3) Not enough bandwidth for your neighbourhood. Think of internet cable as a water tab that originate from one end of the street to the end. Chances are you won't get much water if the house upstream using all your bandwidth. You can call your provider and complain about it. They'll probably make you disconnect and reconnect your router and etc. They can boost the bandwidth on the system if they finally have enough of you lol.
4) Somehow the cable that's providing internet has been damaged. If you call your service provider they can check it on their end and hopefully fix it.
My bet is that someone else in the neighbourhood is using a lot more bandwidth then usual. Usually the cable provider ration their bandwidth by normal usage and today because it's a holiday and everyone got nothing to do except to be online.
Also there's the misconception that online gaming uses a lot of bandwidth and that's false. Most of the graphic and game mechanics are actually process on your computer and only gameplay data is sent and received to the game server. Stuff like online streaming and youtube consumes more bandwidth because they are actually streaming graphics through.
1) Physiscal. Should probably find my Linksys disc and make it passworded. I used to complain "Man, I need to check something online and my friend's wifi is passworded".
2) You have no idea, I did this like 6 times.
3) This has never happened. I doubt its bandwith for the neighbourhood. Trust me, I used to download 8 things at once, and my latency was only like, 200-300. Not 1000.
4) Perhaps, the modem is old, and I should probably call them.
To copy data from command prompt right click and select mark, then drag over the area you want to copy and press enter.
You can then paste the information into these forums as a reply.
I bet someone's leeching your network and using up all your upload bandwidth. Your download speed might kick ass but if someone is using up all your upload speed (ie by running torrents and not capping the upload speed limit) it'll make your latency spike and your download speed slow to a crawl.
You said you had linksys, so go here:

Try using admin/<blank> and admin/admin for logging in.
See if the first thing that comes up is an internet connection setup wizard. If it's got one, run through it and stick a password on the wifi. If it doesn't, hunt through the settings till you find where you set your wireless password (or just google your router model online.)
It's seriously irresponsible not to have password protected wifi. Do you really want the cops kicking down your door because they think you're downloading child pornography?
If you're using DSL, you may have bad wiring, either internal to your house, where it enters your house, or somewhere else down the line. You won't normally notice that kind of thing on a phone, but DSL is less tolerant. It might just be constantly losing packets and having to resend them.
Also the * * * * on the tracert, if you're getting a full set of stars on row may not mean anything got lost. Many routers block traceroutes. Most of the time you'll be lucky to get 3 hops before hitting some that block at.
By "promt" do you want me to put in "Right click" then "mark", or actually right click it. I tried dragging the cursor, didn't work that way.
You can also do
tracert whatever.address > somefile.txt
which will dump the output of the command into a text file. it'll just sit there looking like nothing is happening until it finishes. But if you cancel it, however far it had gotten will still be in the file. The file will be located in whatever directory the commnd prompt shows.
Right-click inside the window where you're running the tracert (this is known as the Command Prompt) and select "Mark", then highlight the text you want to copy by clicking and dragging and use the classic Ctrl-C shortcut to copy. I tried this just now and it seems to work just fine.
As for forgetting the wifi password, honestly, I don't see anything wrong with just writing the darn thing down and putting it in a place it's hard to lose, given it's for your own home and you're probably fine with other people that enter the household being able to find the piece of paper you wrote it on. It's not like your Facebook password or something, since it only works in/near your own home for getting wifi.
Its fixed itself, and its not doing the sporatic going from 90 to 1000 in a second. I think my sister is a liar and was torrenting or downloading shit. I need to find that Linksys disk so I can stop this, and anyone else from coming in.
In fact, its going faster than usual. This is the first time I've seen servers with 16 people at 57-67, most start 80-90, and web browsing is surprisingly fast.
Or the problem is weather related and hasnt been resolved and will rear its head again under similar conditions.
You don't need a linksys disc to change your router configs. Just access the console by typing your computer's gateway IP into a web browser.
