That's funny because I have the same resentment about Whomp.

I laughed at the point you said black holes orbiting, because I can just instantly see that. (I love the idea of a binary black hole, and even more that it's us. I'm kind of an astronomy nerd hobbyist)
I don't claim to be an expert, but I actually genuinely think it does. I don't think his comic is charming enough to be able to get by without actually having a joke. Most comics like that are designed much more elegantly overall, but he's sticking to the typical four-panel layout most days, which is much more strongly suited to the setup+punchline style humor.
There are plenty of comics that can be funny or endearing without having a joke, and I just don't think Sinfest is that strip, sadly. I think he just doesn't care. That's my biggest gripe, I think.
