You are playing an RTS. A large and powerful enemy unit shows up flanked by several smaller enemy units. Given the RTS logic that a unit will remain in a constant state regardless of how much health it has, is it better to focus on the large enemy unit first or the smaller escorts first? Do you destroy the single, tough capital ship first or do you attack the numerous, fragile fighters first?
Lanchester's Square Law.
Attack the fragile units first, since the effect of reducing the number of weapons firing at you while simultaneously increasing the number of weapons you can fire at any given enemy unit follows a power law.

depends how much damage each unit type doles out

It's an RTS so assume the game is balanced for hit points and damage. I'm playing League of Legends and there's a cluster of enemies that made me think about this dilemma: there is a pack of neutral wolves, two small and one large. The large wolf is carrying a valuable prize - a green buff - which is the whole point of fighting them in the first place so usually I ignore the smaller wolves and focus immediately on the large target. While the green buff helps me kill the remaining smaller wolves faster (they're worth money), the green buff only lasts a short amount of time, time I don't really want to waste killing wolves. I'm thinking maybe it's better to kill the small enemies first and take some extra hits from the large wolf.

Early game you likely need to take the big wolf out first because it still has the possibility of killing you [aka the damage output is unignorable] and two or three extra hits from the green wolf can in fact be deadly if you're not properly prepared. Late game this question is moot.

Hmm, I would still take the big wolf out first personally, but at that point it is rather sheer personal choice (if you value the extra 5-10? seconds of the buff over X hp loss)

Ah sweet, during my workout, i had an idea that could completely turn my card game on its head...
Wait, that's not sweet, that means i'll have to start from the ground up again!
i haven't even really tested it and i'm already thinking of ways to restart. i am not very good at this, am I?

Well that probably means you've got plenty of ideas in your head; it probably is pretty good of you to at least consider all possible angles (since you're not being like, forced by The Man to churn out a game in X time period)

Actually, the plan is to make a prototype of Ver 0.2 and try it out and then, after i collect enough data, work on 0.3 which may be very different from 0.2.
but yeah, i'm gonna move the game away from Magic: The Gathering territory.
i don't think rape doesn't hurt was as bad as sheep's. i mean, ege's thing was more ignorance (some of which obviously translated into insensitivity as well). whereas sheep's thing was like... hooooly fuck.
