Honestly, I felt that the parallels between Aang resisted bloodbending using the Avatar State (which is probably a spirit-bending state at some level) and Amon resisting it, along with both Aang and Amon being able to use spiritbending to depower people, implied that Amon was using some degree of spiritbending to resist Tarrlok.
It'd be interesting if Aang had taught some people how to spirit bend in the eventuality that someone else like Yakone came up. But instead of following Aang's teachings, the student(s) became disillusioned with benders in general, and then you get Amon.
Seriously, have you ever seen both of them in the same room together?
Think about it.
It's the reason Korra can't airbend - the airbending part of her soul developed a separate consciousness, jumped out of her body one night, put on some robes and a mask, and vowed to wage war against other forms of inferior bending.

Makes sense! We've yet to see Amon debend an airbender, after all!
Has anyone listened to the commentary on the last airbender seasons 1-3? The writers seemed like cool guys at comiccon and I like commentary on other shows like futurama and venture bros. is it worth buying the DVDs for? I've watched through the show 3 times now, but wouldn't mind commentary. I was hoping to wait for bluray but the aspect ratio will probably prevent that from happening.

It does convenient explain the whole tunic/cloak/mask combo.

I remember listening to a few (long time ago). I think they were pretty cool but not as funny as Futurama's commentary.
I assumed it was a lazy recreation of a double-breasted tunic with a closed collar.
(the best image I could find, Marshal Timoshenko of the USSR)
They just didn't bother doing the collar clasp because he wears a tunic over it. Plus he's got those shoulder pads and a different pattern for his sleeves.

@jeddy, yes, I remember they talked about working with certain kinds of martial arts styles and their inspirations for set designs and stuff like that.

That's some Fight Club shit right there, son.

OK I'm skipping 5 pages (ended up being around 9) to post this so it may have to be edited but was I the only person that immediately assumed that Amon is:
Yakone (who should probably be dead unless some shenanigans went down
or (more likely)
Yakone's other son who's roughly Korra's age?
"Republic City is mine, and I'll be back for it." - Yakone
Then Aang took his bending.
Maybe Yakone realised the secret to taking people's bending in the same way Aang did when the Mega-Lion-Turtle showed him. He then taught this secret to someone.
Nah. Completely different motivations and ideologies. Yakone says he'll be back to rule the city as a super-powerful bending crime boss (this was before Aang actually dispatched him, anyway); Amon wants to get rid of bending altogether and empower people who are typically traumatized by bending crime bosses.
Also, as has been pointed out, Amon does *not* de-bend people in the same way that Aang does. Which rules out the idea that Yakone/Amon learned how to do it from Aang.

Tenzin is no such thing. They just didn't have pills for ADD in the 1920s.
Tenzin seems pretty competent, it's just that things seem to be stacked against him much of the time, and he's got a hellova lot of stuff to deal with due to his position etc.
As for fighting, he seems to be pretty good at kicking ass considering that his life seems to have been mostly one of administration and politics, instead of battling in the physical sense.
He's not perfect though. And his failure to teach Korra airbending is Korra's failure to concentrate on it for more than two seconds, and not Tenzin's. He's already successfully taught his young children the beginnings of airbending, so he probably knows what he's doing there.

Wait, does that mean Amon is Korra, or that Korra is Amon?

A lot of people don't do things in an identical way to the way they're taught. This is maybe just adapted to use two different chi/chakra/pressure points while still doing the same job. Maybe it's the whole lies/deceit thing.
Well, originally, they were just another more extravagant version of a tunic, like a double-breasted suit. Mobsters might have favored them, but originally that's just you opening the top of a double-breasted tunic.
There is a military element there, I guess, since lots of countries use and have used double-breasted greatcoats as part of their winter military uniforms (usually dress purposes). The original National Revolutionary Army of the ROC, if that's what they're going for here, didn't at the time (assuming LOK is happening in the 1920s or so) because of the popularity and easy of manufacture of the Zhongshan Suit, which became the uniform.
It does seem to appear in a lot of 1930s/1950s pop culture as being futuristic though. Maybe that was what they were going for.

Yowza.
As much as I like the artwork I really wish they had Tenzin or Lin Bei Fong there instead of Amon's lackey.

Also people need to stop saying Amon was immune to bloodbending. It obviously had some effect, he was just able to either adjust to it or fight through it. Either way he was not 'immune'.

Just like Aang, who had to go into Avatar mode to nullify it.

But this is a fantasy show, after all. Fantasy clothing is not implausible. Or even just imitation clothing, like a clip-on tie.

Who taught you how to do this stuff?

Naw, she's just a girl that can't concentrate for more than two seconds. If something were really up then Tenzin would have noticed.

The real question is what the fuck bib fronts are for.

Up goes the ante, holy shit this is good tv.
The only explanation is that there were a bunch of cyborgs running around in the 20's ans 30's. Why else would you invent such a conspicuous fashion?
Or I guess it would be useful if you were eating ribs a lot.
Dun dun daaaaah!
