I love both dearly. Though I think Anansi Boys is just a little bit more my jam. But my opinion could change on the day there.

American Gods is so distinctly my jam that unfortunately Anansi Boys can't really measure up
I should give it a reread sometime though, I'm not sure I gave it a fair shake because of what it was a sequel to

And a couple of short stories here and there that include some of the same characters, but don't really continue any of the storylines from the book. It is very much a self-contained narrative.
If you're getting it from a used bookstore, check the copyright date. Gaiman released an "author's preferred text" in 2011 that replaces some pretty important scenes that his original publisher cut out in order to reach a sales-friendly page count.
I got about halfway through Anansi Boys before deciding I didn't like any of the characters enough to care what happened to them, and quit reading.
Loved American Gods though.
Before following any advice, opinions, or thoughts I may have expressed in the above post, be warned: I found Keven Costners "Waterworld" to be a very entertaining film.
They are both very good and the gap for "better" is quite narrow.

I will say American God has the association points for me though. I got to see Neil Gaiman speak and briefly (very briefly) meet him while I was reading it.

I bought American Gods for my school library because everyone was raving about it. Then I started reading it and hahaha this probably should not be in the school library.

oh was it the part where a goddess of sex climaxes with a partner and then absorbs him into her vagina while he says I worship you?????

I've told this story here before. But my adviser in college turned out to be Gaiman's chaperone for the talk. Needless to say there was a super long line to get his autograph. Apparently he stayed around until 2 am or so to make sure everyone got an autograph if they wanted one. My adviser told me he remained cheery and talkative with everyone too. Afterwards he asked my adviser where he could get a steak at that hour.
My adviser shrugged sadly, "It's Arkansas at 2am, our only options are Denny's or Waffle House."
"Denny's it is!"
And so my adviser took Neil Gaiman to Denny's in Arkansas at 2am. There they had a blue haired waitress who Gaiman began talking to about her hair. Turns out she did it because of Delirium from Sandman, if I recollect correctly. And her shift was totally made.

My best friend loaned her copy to her mother. I brought that scene up to her, and then she tried desperately to steal it back before her mom got that part. She was unsuccessful.

So yeah. Apparently he's a super nice guy too.
yeah this was a separate time and much earlier, but he stopped by my college campus and a friend of a friend was the person handling his arrival/afterward stuff. The went to a nice steakhouse near the theater where she went on to spill an entire glass of red wine allllllll over him, and he was reportedly super cool about it. She was mortified. He had a very expensive leather jacket on that he joked was not a big deal, just elephant leather, and laughed it off.

I continually forget about this scene, because it's honestly so minor that it's never felt like a big deal to me
I've had multiple friends ask me why I didn't warn them about it going in, and all I can do is shrug

Minor spoilers for American Gods, if you haven't read the book
I read it long enough ago that I'm still avoiding spoilers.
also somewhere I own a Gaiman-signed copy of Good Omens. I hope.
I'm in the same boat (well, the first part). I considered re-reading it before the show but decided that I would probably enjoy the show more if I waited until AFTER to re-read.

I have a signed copy of Endless Nights and I will stab anyone who touches it.
I also have a Grant Morrison signed copy of Arkham Asylum. But I bought that for a quarter at a used book store. I'm slightly less precious about it.
We're actually reading Anansi Boys for my book club.
I'm excited to see what people think, as its genuinely one of my favorite books (and I love American Gods, but Anansi Boys is just a more fun read to me).
Good Omens is fantastic too.

Also high five to Gaiman to being the one of the only comic writers from that era to still be pretty much not totally shit the bed on something or another.

who else are you thinking of?
chris Claremont, james robinson, alan moore?
Mignola, and quite a few artists of that era, Allreds and what not.. And to some extent Moore, though your mileage may very given thoughts on recent works.

Steam
That character was expanded into a main supporting role
So I'm very hopeful
I thought I read somewhere that Fuller specifically stated that scene is in the show.
The character certainly did, and that was one of like two scenes with her. So probably?
Edit: dang, this thread's getting some velocity.
They're definitely doing it

Grant Morrison lost a lot of favor amongst the comic scene about some fucky things about creator's rights in his Supergods book. Like a lot.
Mignola, and quite a few artists of that era, Allreds and what not.. And to some extent Moore, though your mileage may very given thoughts on recent works.
yeah that makes sense
I've always thought of him as part of the second wave but I think that's more because I've never read anything of this prior to his run on JLA
I haven't seen anything he's put out for years though, so maybe that doesn't really count
