It's called Pier Solar and the Great Architects. It's actually a new game, not a translation ala Beggar Prince.
It is being made by a fairly large group of Genesis homebrew people. Unlike some similar projects I've seen, they're really getting stuff done. A lot of work has obviously already been put into it.
It's going to come out on cartridge and as a Sega CD disc. Cartridge version will have marginally better graphical effects for technical reasons, Sega CD version better music (obviously).
A few key points:
- Traditional J-RPG, random encounters ahoy
- The first 64 megabit Genesis game
- October 29, 2008 Release date
- A demo version is coming out any day now
It's looking good considering how much more still has to be done. The music they have so far is also quite good. You can listen to some of it on the official website's media section.

Somewhat dated, but still informative and has some screenshots.

The Teaser trailer.
All in all, I'm quite looking forward to it and plan on pre-ordering when they get to that stage. Anyone else?

Footage from the demo.
Release date is pushed back to end of December. Pre-order cost is $35, including shipping.
Oh yes, and the demo is now out. I tried it, seemed solid enough. Writing was actually pretty decent I thought.
Demo can be had from the official website.

In all seriousness, cool? I applaud their dedication to put something like this out.

And the trailer was horrible too.
That said this still looks pretty terrible

Uncommon? That?
It looks like it's just trying to be an old JRPG.
Yeah, but isn't that sort of like saying "Anyone could write a Harlequin Romance Novel!"
Sure - maybe they haven't broken any new ground but I still think it is kind of impressive that they (potentially) got it done.
It also reminds me of Secret of Evermore (bad)
I'm not saying it's not an impressive effort, I'm saying that's not an uncommon art style if that's what was meant by style. It looks like a really bad American attempt at anime.
I mean, it's a cool idea.
Because the Sega community are just that obsessive-compulsive.
I never asked for this!
The backgrounds seem drawn a bit atypically, though the actual content looks par for course.
I suppose it could be just a lack of "professional polish" but I hesitate because it doesn't seem flat-out "bad" in my eyes.

I assumed it was somehow made with RPG Maker.
Yeah, I didn't think it was too great. I think the sprite work is solid though, which is what actually matters. Regardless, they've got quite a ways to go on the graphics before they're done.
Really? Like what? I haven't seen any that had more than competent sprite work that was original. But, I haven't looked that hard or anything...
On a further note, if you read the forums at least one of the guys involved in the project is making another Genesis game, some kind of action game. There's rumors they might do other stuff also.
Most of the tools they're using they have to make themselves, so once they get them done future projects are a lot easier.
On a last note, I am curious what type of chips they're using on the carts. Are they actually doing a big enough run to produce real ROM chips, or are they just going to use EPROMS or something else? I gather Beggar Prince used some strange special stuff on the board, but I dunno much about that.
*smack* Stop that!
This game looks pretty bad. The art especially. What little was shown the gameplay looks decidedly uninteresting.
Is it the tiny, moving, nigh-invisible links? Or the uncontrollable slideshow of screenshots?
are you saying that this website should try harder to sell that game to you
maybe there need to be more flash
or the music loop needs to be louder
and the text buttons needs to be smaller and bounce around more
would that seal the deal
Now you've got my attention.
lol
Yes is it far too easy to click buttons on normal websites. For too long have we taken stationary buttons for granted. But no not this website. This website says "Hey buddy, im gonna make you fucking work for that screenshot page."
I never asked for this!
Oh, there was a screenshot page? I didn't look that long. I realized that whoever made the page hated humanity, and so I left. The way I look at it, I'm not sure I want to see screenshots from a game made by the people who inflicted that site upon me.
Okay, but they didn't choose RPG Maker. They chose the SEGA Genesis, and I applaud them for it.
Yeah, it's that.
A big view area that takes up like 7/8 of the screen.
Then, on the left side, or maybe the top. You have different buttons. They say "Screenshots" "Videos" "Characters" "Story".
Crazy, right?
Does their website answer this question anywhere? I did not see it.

I could go find a copy of Mosaic to load it up.
Applaud them for making a subpar looking game for a dead console? I wasn't aware there was a reward for "wasted effort".
Because they want to.
God bless freedom!! And democracy!! And bacon!!
