The third book could easily have been written with Will and Lyra growing up together, or having to spend time apart in their own worlds but able to see each other again periodically, but Pullman chose to end the book on a loss. With all the talk of old lovers, passionate old flames from youth, I wonder about Pullman himself. I know he's married and has kids, but what old flame from his own youth still burns in his heart to make him romanticize lost love so much?
