Defender, I think there'll be a lot of people who will it fun creating a cool looking creature within the bounds of the game, taking it as a challenge to make their creature look good as it evolves. It's disappointing that the layout itself has no impact on gameplay but that would probably restrict the creative possibilities quite a bit.
I know you're talking from a strict game design standpoint, but I think the two types of players you've outlines are a bit too black and white, there are going to be hundreds of thousands of people in the gray area in between.
The two types of players I've described have no real gray area in between. Maybe I need to refine how I phrased it, but two types I mentioned were differentiated only by whether or not they're satisfied purely with the creator. They either are or are not.
I guess the player I'm talking about is one who is not satisfied with just the creator then, as they also enjoy creating aesthetically pleasing creatures within the bounds of the gameplay restrictions (complexity, DNA points, etc).
Yeah, I understand that. It's just that that particular player tends to vanish pretty fast, because the vast majority of players do not enjoy doing things that have no effect. Now, the type that will just play with the creator for years is out there, and those aren't really so much game players as people who want to create something. There are also the type who are actually in it to play a game, and those will play but will disregard the creation aspect. As you are pointing out, there's also the group that combines those two attributes. Those, however, are much fewer in number and players who seem initially to be in that group will often quickly become bored or frustrated with either the meaninglessness of arranging things that don't change the game or with the restrictiveness of having to deal with points and stats and crap instead of being able to make whatever creature you want. That test will tend to divide players largely into the first or second type, and not many will stay around to be the hybrid.
Whoa daaaaamn look at that. If humans were flying through space and saw that, I am not sure of whether they would go straight for the photon torpedoes or actually attempt communication.

No, according to Defender you don't need to buy the game at all because you will get annoyed at being limited by the game mechanics.
Are there like, variable environments on different planets? Not like "the ground here is green and the ground here is red", but, like, different actual environmental variables? Diffferent gas distribution, densities, gravitational forces, blah de blah?

Man this game is great
I installed it, then went to make an account, turned out I already had one, so I tried to log in but it said I hadn't verified the email they sent, but they havent sent one, so I clicked help, and it opened a browser and it was 404

Of course that would happen Defender.
If the humans tried to call him on the phone he wouldn't be able to pick it up to answer it,
I need to create a race of amphibious Cuttlefish that will overcome their natural lack of strength through aggressive expansionism and technological mastery.
I TOTALLY JUST EVOLVED THEN FUCKED THIS BITCH RIGHT THEN ME, THE MALE, JUST SHITS OUT AN EGG HAT TRIPLED IN SIZE IN LIKE 2 SECONDS
are you seriously saying this game is out in Australia right now?
I will be pissed off if this is the case, I'm sure JB will not break the street date and I've already pre-ordered with them. Plus I took Thursday off so I could play all day.

This happened to my account with the demo as well. Fuck that shit. Someone tell me how to fix it.

I'm getting less and less excited about this game. Hmmm.
The huge disappointments of Black and White and Fable(different people, I know) have taught me to be very cautious of the totally bangin' awesome and revolutionary game that's about to come out.

By "different people" you mean "different person," right? Peter Molyneux is a disappointment-generating machine. However, your general point is right. If there's a new tech or a new game that promises to redefine something and it's not tech by John Carmack or gameplay by Hideo Kojima or a story-world by Warren Spector, it has a pretty high chance of being bullshit.
I would call my mood "cautious optimism". To put it another way, I would like this game enough that I would suck up to, but no more than, four and a half dicks.
I withheld the (slight) temptation to go down and buy Spore a day early for $20 more from EB, who broke the street date, but I'm glad I waited because now I have all day to play.
My DVD drive is making strange sounds though and I realised this is the first game I've bought for PC that wasn't a digital download in a long time, I hope it makes it through the install
In fact, it just gave me two CRC errors which went away when I retried, goddammit, I think I better start looking around to see if I have a spare drive
Edit: Found another drive, seems to be installing properly now

ZERO CROSSES
the control scheme at teh start aint very good, but it promotes aggresion and mindless swearing, so it's kinda fun really
