So I am aware that 3D studio has a scale tool, but if I try to use it it always skews my objects. Is there some way to quickly and easily make something 4 times bigger?

If you click and hold the scale/squash button, it should pop up with 3 different options.
The one you want is "Select and uniform scale" It looks like a smaller square inside a larger one.
Then in any of the viewports, make sure the center "triangle" is highlighting, then scale to your heart's desire.
You can also right-click on the button and a dialogue box will pop up where you can enter values manually.
I can take screenshots if this explanation isn't clear enough
