[Let's Play] Might and Magic 7 Update 3: For Blood and Trading Cards

MightAndMagic7Box.jpg

Wiki time: Might and Magic VII: For Blood and Honor is a role playing game published in 1999 by 3DO and developed by New World Computing, and is the predecessor of Might and Magic VIII: Day of the Destroyer. It is the sequel to Might and Magic VI: The Mandate of Heaven and, in a way, Might and Magic III: Isles of Terra.

MM7 is played from a first person perspective and your group of 4 adventurers is displayed with little portraits at the bottom of the screen. They can get some pretty fugly faces with some of the status effects. The combat can be real time or changed to turn based at the press of a key. And the general amount of enemies in an area is well... let's just say you do a lot of goblin genocide.

Updates:
Chapter 1: I'd buy that for a dollar!
Chapter 2: Welcome to Flavor Country... with goblins
Chapter 3: For Blood and Trading Cards

Some images of EverQuest era graphic goodness.

MM7_Morcarack.jpg

So, I've never done a LP and with the amount of choices to make in MM7 and my sheer joy at playing it I figured "Hey why not?" I ask if anyone knows of a good image host and way to take pictures (I will be defaulting on photobucket and shft-prtscr to paint because I am dense.)

So depending on the interest this generates let's see if we can get a starting party decided upon.
We have 4 slots to fill and they can be any combination of the following. Give me names, races, and class. I will figure out the stats and skills from there. Also I place this monumental decision upon you for Emerald Island. Do I unleash the firefly throng upon the citizens? Or do I take them down myself?

Races:
Human
human-male-1.gifhuman-male-2.gifhuman-female-1.gifhuman-female-2.gif
human-male-3.gifhuman-male-4.gifhuman-female-3.gifhuman-female-4.gif
Dwarf
dwarf-male-1.gifdwarf-male-2.gifdwarf-female-1.gifdwarf-female-2.gif
Elf
elf-male-1.gifelf-male-2.gifelf-female-1.gifelf-female-2.gif
Goblin
goblin-male-1.gifgoblin-male-2.gifgoblin-female-1.gifgoblin-female-2.gif
Classes:

Archer- A cross between the Knight and Sorcerer, well balanced in combat and spell casting, excelling in ranged attacks.
icon_archer.gif
Cleric- Holy warriors concentrated in the art of healing and defense devoted to the self magics.
icon_cleric.gif
Druid- Cross of a Cleric and Sorcerer, master of elemental and self magics.
icon_druid.gif
Knight- Excellent in battle, master of several weapons and armor. Can take punishment as well as dole it out.
icon_knight.gif
Monk- Devoted in hand to hand combat a monk develops an amazing armor class.
icon_monk.gif
Paladin- Combination of a Knight & Cleric. A holy crusader that is a better than average fighter and master of the self magics.
icon_paladin.gif
Ranger- A cross breed of the Knight and Druid who can expert elemental and self magics in time.
icon_ranger.gif
Sorcerer- Even though limited to the use of staff, dagger, bow, and leather armor the potential to devastate the opposition lies here. However, concentration on the magics leave little time for development of the body.
icon_sorcerer.gif
Thief- A good fighter, swift and deadly. Deft at removing your valuables.

How interesting. I'm actually debating whether or not to take a stab at the only Might & Magic game(s) I own: World of Xeen. I've taken a stab at them a couple times before, but they're oh so hard to get running properly on DOSBox.

I've always wanted to try some of these M&M games, I saw a LP of M&M 3 or 4, very funny commentary. I did play the hell out of HOM&M 2-5, where is this one set? Old HOMM3 right?

This is my favorite M&M, despite the shitty graphics and other problems. It can actually be finished.. It's also set in the HoM&M3 world (Erathia) which is probably the world they expanded on the most.

I like the Knight/Ranger/Cleric/Sorcerer combo a lot. Covers all your bases and has all the specialists to do their thing. Race doesn't really matter, but I like Humans and Elves because of the war later on.

So if a Druid is a combo of Cleric and Sorceror, and Rangers are combos of Knights and Druids, that means they are actually a combo of Knight, Cleric, and Sorceror.

So 3 rangers and a thief gogo.

This is the kind of game where the pure magic users own faces. If you're good at the game (and can get past the beginning), you could roll a Cleric and three Sorcerers and it will feel like cheating. I like the Ranger too for the bow, perception, and backup magic. The Knight can use the sweet gear and haul your ass out when everyone else gets killed.

    1.Human Female Paladin
    Dwarf Male Knight
    Elf Female Sorcerer
    and Human Male Thief

    2. 3 rangers and a thief gogo.

    3. Knight/Ranger/Cleric/Sorcerer Humans and Elves

Keep em coming and bring on some names as well. I will probably start this up Friday and hopefully have Emerald Island done that night. Also remember. Firefly horde flooding over the town or the noble way and slay them all myself?

You mean you can either ignore them(which leads to them slaughtering the townspeople) or take them on? I'm going to request you go into detail on the gameplay, because I have a hard time telling from the OP.

I won't steal all the names, but for the Paladin: Serena.

And for image hosting at photobucket, you might want to establish an alt account, because a lot of images could easily kill your monthly bandwidth.

I remember this game. The AI had an annoying propensity to fuck the shit out of my healers. So usually all they'd ever try to do is keep THEMSELVES alive since nobody else ever got touched. I preferred the AI in MM6 much better because of that.

The best part of this game was getting a trainer and killing the

That, and Fly. Fly singlehandedly... I want to say tripled the playtime of this game for me.

I played the hell out of MM2, and I played a bit of... uh. I can't remember which one it was, I'll check it when I get home.

I was always a massive fan of Archers for their ability to use a Bow even if engaged in 'close combat', letting them stock up on +stat gear, but that was MM2 rules. Also, Dancing Sword.

Are druids capped on max-spell level like Paladins and Archers were in the previous games? (Pure spellcasters - Clerics and Sorcerors - could get all 9 spell levels, Archers and Paladins eventually capped out at 7, and I think they got their level 7 spells after pure casters got their level 9s).

Only four slots, and you used to get 6! That's a hard choice. Thieves are always useful, but I'd want to try a monk.

Ranger, Monk, Sorceror, Paladin? So little healing!

I believe Druids are capped on their alignment spells and have less magic power overall. You really do want a Cleric/Sorcerer, and at least one other caster for backup healing and utility. That's why I suggested a Ranger. You could also go

    Monk/Druid
    Thief/Druid
    Knight/Druid
    Paladin/Archer

    as your other two.

And I am a huge fan of "Fly" as well.

Alright so far we've got two votes for this

    Human Female Paladin Serena
    Dwarf Male Knight
    Elf Female Sorcerer
    and Human Male Thief Sebastian

Which is going to strain the mana on that paladin for all the healing heh. But it's doable.

Fill in the names and maybe even the specific faces and we should be set.

Jesus fucking H. Christ this game was, I swear to god, my favorite RPG back in the day. I must have played through it a hundred fucking times. I have every voice script in the game committed to memory so much and able to imitate them so expertly, it unnerves many of my friends. I remember every insane detail of this game. Save scrubbing the dragon corpses so I could get rare items. Continuously jumping up cliff faces to scale them before I had the Jump or Fly spell. Spamming the wishing well on the Kreegan land for infinite skill points. Brings back so many good memories.

7 was the most polished, I think. I really like a lot of the dungeon designs in six but seven was just more... coherent. 8 was a bit rushed and very uhhh, traditional? I only say that because the four elements played such a big part in everything happening in the game.

did anyone else kill Q in MM6? Or uhh, Lurch? Q drops a horn that lets you know the exact HP of a monster and Lurch was just a big minotaur in a tiny closet.

They're goddamn ear worms. I remember all this off by heart, with the inflections and accents and everything.

"Do you need healing? Go in peace."
"You wanna ride high? Ride with me."
"Can I help you with anything?"
    "Penny pinching miser!"
    "You need training?"
"Come ing! hhow may I hhelp you?"

Also... the opening scene, from memory:
Goblin: We detected... a large raiding party, of forty elves, invading our territory. When the time was right... we attacked!
    King-guy: Oooh... how brave.
G: The elves fell back before the fury of our attack. We [unintelligible] our duty to defend our territory. We killed half a dozen of them before they knew what was happening. The rest ran like [something] from an axe. We gave chase, and I saw with my -
    KG laughs.
G: What is so amusing, master?
    KG: Nothing... [chuckles]... continue.

    SCENE CUTS TO ELVES

Elf: Of course, as I was saying, we were chasing the goblins, shooting them in the back because they would not stand and fight honorably.
    Good-king: Mmm... regrettable. But necessary.
E: Yes, your majesty. [Something about sea creatures wearing boxes]

    SCENE CUTS TO GOBLINS

KG: Wait, what was that? Go back.
G: You mean the part where I personally slew two elves with a single arrow?
KG: No, no, after that lie! Tell me about the boxes!

    SCENE CUTS TO ELVES

E: They were about an inch and a half on each side, and made of a curious black metal. I couldn't get a closer look.

    ... and that's about all I got.

Chapter 1: I'd buy that for a dollar!
    LP-0000.jpg
Here we are, our illustrious heroes!
Serena the holier-than-thou paladin, Terwin III the ever drunk knight, Cassandra the supercilious sorceress, and Sebastian the womanizing thief.

    LP-0009.jpg

Hrm, "gross violations of civilized behavior". We might have to put a sheet over Terwin and Sebastian then.

    LP-0012.jpg

Our guide was quite the talkative one, that is until Terwin stared at her for 5 minutes straight and then broke wind. She was silent for the rest of our adventure here. For once Terwin's odd bodily noises are useful.

    LP-0020.jpg

A wonderful contest is taking place here on Emerald Island.

    LP-0019.jpg

And the reward sounds like quite the prize! Lord Markham is such a benevolent man!

    LP-0023.jpg

It appears there are missing contestants. I think we should solve this mystery and claim the rewa... I mean we must find and rescue them!

    LP-0025.jpg

Hrm this place doesn't look very dangerous.

    LP-0027.jpg

OH GOD OH GOD OH GOD

    LP-0029.jpg

Well that didn't go so bad now did it. And this Mr. Malwick sounds like a good guy to talk to.

    LP-0031.jpg

See it only costs 50 gold to bring you back and yet we made 1000! Sebastian is always right in matters of money.

    LP-0071.jpg

A dubious offer with certainly no negative future ramifications you say?

    LP-0072.jpg

    Sold!

    LP-0040.jpg

Of course Terwin ran off into the swamp and started rambling on about something incoherent as usual, except it didn't attract the usual crowd...

    LP-0066.jpg

Good thing Terwin comes equipped with drunken strength to get us out of these situations he gets us into.

    LP-0044.jpg

Of course the fireballs left him without eyebrows. Man, is that weird looking.

    LP-0086.jpg

We then met a fellow contestant.

    LP-0084.jpg

    He was a bit slow...

    LP-0095.jpg

We didn't take them up on their trade which made them quite angry but we did take their tip and go searching in the temple of the moon.

    LP-0109.jpg

Which was, of course, filled with 1 billion spiders, and rats (both regular and flying)

    LP-0119.jpg

We even found a couple of thugs! But they were studying diligently so we didn't bother them.

    LP-0129.jpg

That is until their ass hat of a leader decided to demand our stylish headgear.

    LP-0131.jpg

Long story short. Don't try and steal from a paladin. She was literally lecturing them whilst smashing their faces with her mace. Scary stuff.

The final item required was an instrument... But where to get one.

    LP-0015.jpg

Of course! The bard. And Sebastian even had the hots for her.

    LP-0138.jpg

Watching him work... It was like a magician. I don't even know how he managed to get that lute from her... and her bra... and wallet... and all in just 5 minutes!

    LP-0140.jpg

After all the dubious offers, amateur pest extermination, womanizing/theft, and singed corpses in dragon caves. We finally had all the items and won the contest!

    LP-0147.jpg
