Hey, I'm in the mood for some good sci-fi movies, but I'm not extremely well-versed in the genre.
Movies I've seen/liked/etc.:
Firefly/Serenity
Star Wars
Star Trek
Event Horizon
Alien/s/3
Riddick
The new BSG
District 9
Bladerunner
Titan A.E.
Stargate
And a few I've forgotten.
Any recommendations?
Edit: Recommended movies that look appealing so far:
Sunshine
Moon
Enemy Mine
Mutant Chronicles
Impostor
Forbidden Planet (maybe)
Tron (seen it, but remember almost nothing)
The Black Hole
Metropolis
Dark City
Solaris
Sleeper
A Boy and His Dog
THX-1138 (the special edition)
Westworld (?)
Gattaca
Going by your movie list, I see a common theme of spaceships'n'aliens. As far as good sci-fi movies in that department go, I think you've got them covered. So here are some other sci-fi "classics".
Action-y sci-fi:
The Matrix
Terminator 1&2
Independence Day
Not so action-y Sci-fi (Sci-fi / Drama? I dunno :P):
Gattaca
12 Monkeys
Close Encounters of the Third Kind
Solaris
Contact
Blade Runner
Dark City
Children of Men
Anime:
Akira
Ghost in the Shell 1/2 (The movies, not the series, Stand Alone Complex)
Solaris (the Tarkovsky version, not the George Clooney one)
The Fifth Element
Men in Black
Sleeper
THX-1138 (the special edition)
A Boy and His Dog
12 Monkeys
Children of Men
Dark City
Also Soylent Green and the Omega Man while we're in Charlton Heston territory.
Logan's Run
Westworld
They Live
Them!
Mad Max 1 & 2 (3 is ok as well, but not quite at the same level as the other two. Also be careful with 1 since some versions have the AWFUL american overdubbing of the original actors)
Day the Earth Stood Still (original, not the keanu reeves abomination)
Hell. Yes. How did I forget that? One of my first Blu-Ray purchases (well, it came free from Sony).
Also, did I just suggest something on your list or did you edit those in like a Ninja?
Yeah, I edited my list, sorry. Apparently there's a bunch of movies that I've seen that slipped my mind.
I'd edit it again, but then it'd get a little long and ridiculous, so.... thanks for the suggestions everybody, I've got a few new flicks to pick out at Blockbuster later tonight. Hats off to you fine folks.
Given the kind of movies you like, you would probably like some Arnold movies: Predator, The Running Man and, Total Recall (Terminators were already mentioned)
I have a soft spot for this movie (loved it when I was a kid): The Black Hole
I actually liked Keanu's "abomination" of The Day the Earth Stood Still, though the original is better. Please note that there is very little action in the original so though a better movie, I can see why people might not enjoy it.
You said you saw Riddict, does that also include Pitch Black ?
You said you saw Riddict, does that also include Pitch Black?
Yup, it includes Pitch Black.
I've seen everything you listed except for a few, if you count me not remembering Tron as having not seen it.
So far it looks like my list of movies that I need to check out goes like this (and I'll update the OP, too):
Sunshine
Moon
Enemy Mine
Mutant Chronicles
Impostor
Forbidden Planet (maybe)
Tron (seen it, but remember almost nothing)
The Black Hole
Metropolis
Dark City
Solaris
Sleeper
A Boy and His Dog
THX-1138 (the special edition)
Westworld (?)
Gattaca
Hmm, looks like I might have my hands full. Excellent.
*Caveat: I'm not really a fan of stuff made before the 1970s when it come to Sci-Fi, or movies in general, which is why I haven't added a few suggestions to the list. I need to be in a special mood to appreciate the camp value... that being said, I'm still going to check out Metropolis because I saw a clip of it and it looked pretty cool. Also, The Day the Earth Stood Still was okay.
Edit: Wow, that Moon movie looks like exactly what I'm in the mood for. The others look cool too, but damn.
An astonishing breakthrough is taking shape on the planet Caprica. The rapidly evolving spheres of human and mechanical engineering have collided, along with the fates of two families. Joined by tragedy in an explosive instant of terror, two rival clans led by powerful patriarchs, Joseph Adama (Esai Morales, Jericho) and Daniel Graystone (Eric Stoltz, The Butterfly Effect) duel in an era of questionable ethics, corporate machinations and unbridled personal ambition as the final war for humanity looms. The latest phenomenon from the executive producers of Battlestar Galactica (Ronald D. Moore and David Eick), set in a time over 50 years earlier, Caprica is entirely its own world - provocative, thrilling and startling relevant to our own.
They Live - Aliens secretly rule the world. Put on these sunglasses and you can see through their propaganda and lies. "I'm here to kick ass and chew bubblegum...and I'm all out of bubblegum."
Mutant Chronicles is one of the worst movies I've ever seen and you'd do yourself a favor if you stay as far away from it as you can.

Outland is probably worth a watch as well. It's nothing to write home about, but it's a fairly solid (if somewhat predictable) sci-fi movie of the Space Western variety. Also, it stars Sean Connery.
Sunshine and Moon are both great movies, you wont regret watching them. I want to second the nomination of primer--that is a great movie which really does time travel better than any I've ever seen.

I forgot about Primer! For a super low budget film its aboslutely spectacular plot wise. You also won't really notice it's as low budget as it is. It just simply doesn't use any special effects, which honestly goes to its benefit imo, it makes for a much more realistic experience.

Righto, thanks for the suggestions. Any more?
Edit: Damn, apparently I've watched a lot of the sci-fi classics, haha.
Not Dark City, though, and I've heard a lot about it.

The original Planet of the Apes

Them!

Day the Earth Stood Still (original, not the keanu reeves abomination)
the original is central to sci fi
the anime is pretty good

A classic: Forbidden Planet
You liked Alien, so you would probably like this too: The Thing
I always loved Tron. And the sequel is coming out.
Starship Troopers is a great satire, with good CG and lots of bug killin'.
Semi Distant future movies:
Minority Report
Imposter
Equililbrium
I have a soft spot for this movie (loved it when I was a kid): The Black Hole
I actually liked Keanu's "abomination" of The Day the Earth Stood Still, though the original is better. Please note that there is very little action in the original so though a better movie, I can see why people might not enjoy it.
You said you saw Riddict, does that also include Pitch Black ?
Children of Men (more about the demise of the human race)
In a similar vein, Babylon AD. Not really great, but entertaining.
Another James Cameron classic: The Abyss
Enemy of the State is cool.
If you liked Event Horizon, you might enjoy Sphere (though I still prefer EH).
Though more fantasy, and the fact I love Dragons, I like Reign of Fire
I like Will Smith movies, some have mentioned the Men in Black, I also liked I, Robot and I am Legend.
Though an independent film and more about time travel, Primer is good.
Well, that's gone through the list of all the ones I have..but I'm pretty sure I'm missing a lot of classics...hmm...

This movie is beyond strange. And yes Moon is brilliant, one of my favorites of the year so far.

I found THQ 1138 terribly boring. But that's just me.
Second / Third much of the list above, they are good recommendations.
