6800XT misery...

So I finally decided to take the chance and get another video card. After my previous tries months ago, I was a bit gunshy. PCI-E seemed to hate me, so I stuck with AGP which hasn't given me problems. My 9600XT is showing its age though. So, as a Christmas present, my wife got me a nice new GeForce 6800XT AGP card, 512 meg, 256 bit interface. She even got me the Artic NV Silencer5 cooler for it.

The only problem is, it won't work. I uninstalled the ATI drivers, shut down, pulled the 9600XT, put in the 6800XT, booted up. Everything fine, sitting in Windows at 640x480, "found new hardware" pops up. I run the driver CD, drivers install, progress bar makes it all the way to the right. Then the screen goes black, comes back up. Goes black again, stays black, stays black, then my PC reboots. Reboot goes fine, back into windows. I get the "Found Nvidia 6800XT" logo, the little "hardware being installed" icon in the taskbar. The CD drive runs a bit, PC chugs along, then the icon disappears and the CD drive stops. So, I go to reboot again. Shut down, start back up, get past the "Windows" screen, get the black screen with a cursor right before the account screen comes up, then everything freezes. Sits there, cursor with an hourglass, mouse won't move it. Then the PC reboots. Lather. Rinse. Repeat. I plugged the 9600XT back in, and I could boot into windows. So I uninstalled the Nvidia drivers, shut down, stuck the 6800XT back in, reinstalled the drivers, had the same problem.

I've got an AMD 3600+, gig of ram, Win XP, 420w PSU with 18 amps on the 12v rail. I'm literally going nuts. It's like I'm the video card antichrist. Please guys, shoot me some help before I shoot myself in frustration.

Try using driver cleaner to get rid of any catalyst fallout. It seems that they made it buy-only now, but you can still get the free version under that link.

You could also try a "repair" installation of XP, and a fresh reinstall would most likely work also.

btw. you might also try downloading different/newer drivers from nvidia (different because often the newest ones are optimized for the newest hardware and older cards perform a bit worse).
