Don got his break, I think while working in a Miami Beach nightclub known as Murray Franklin's nightclub early in his career, he spotted Frank Sinatra. Rickles said "I just saw your movie, The Pride and the Passion and I want to tell you, the cannon's acting was great." He added, "Make yourself at home, Frank. Hit somebody!"
You just didn't say that to Frank Sinatra back then. But Frank rocked with riotous laughter and the world got to know "Bullet-head," as Frank came to call him.
You probably know him from a more recent role, though
The man has been in fucking everything in the 50s 60s and 70s.
When Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra were the coolest motherfuckers on the planet, Don Rickles was the man that was totally unafraid to call them washed up or old or terrible singers or annoying.
And they loved him for it.
Maybe the last man standing from the golden age of hollywood and the mob days of Vegas. If you fancy yourself a funny asshole you don't know where funny assholes came from, look no further.
The best part is the man really didn't have much of an act. He'd do a little of this or that but the best part of a Don Rickles show is when he decides to lay into the people sitting in the front. Race, religion, height, weight, sexual orientation, nothing is off the table.
Hell the man gave Regis Philbin help getting started when he was on the bloody radio.
