I did a few searches, and wasn't able to find any relevant threads, but if one exists you can of course feel free to direct me to it.
So, I just got once of them fancy new fangled ps3s. You know, the slim kind, with the blu-ray, and the potential awesomeness. I was excited.
The plan was to connect it via hdmi to my 1920x1080 high-def monitor, which is capable of running a native 1080p resolution.
Well, I did that, and anything that displays in 1080p looks great. Unfortunately, it seems most games DON'T. The only game I have for it so far is ImFamous, which only supports 720p. Naturally, a lower resolution on an LCD monitor that runs natively higher leads to an image that is highly unattractive. So much blurriness and jaggedness.
I know the xbox360 can automatically upscale to 1080p, but it seems the ps3 can't? Is there any affordable piece of technology that I can run it through to force upscaling? My monitor, sadly, cannot do it on its own.
tl;dr summary - Goddammit Sony.
edit1:
Nope.
DAMMIT!
Maybe I'll just take the damn thing back for a refund.

Except I'm not willing to spend that much, as I don't watch tv, and would only be using it to play games.
This sucks. I was excited, I wanted to be able to play the ps3 exclusives that weren't available for PC, namely God of War 3 and The Last Guardian. But with most games not seeming to support 1080p, I think I might trade it in for a 360 instead. Or maybe just keep the money and stick to pc gaming.
Anyways of my PS3 game collection (Batman, Dead Space, Valkyria Chronicles, Uncharted, Mirrors Edge, MGS4, & Killzone2) only Valkyria Chronicles makes me have switch to 720p where as all my other games go to 1080p. Demos of inFamous and Force Unleashed also appeared to have to be played at 720p only.
In the video settings I have 480p checked off which you can't change and 1080p checked off so the games that can will use that resolution. If a 720p game is played it will downgrade to 480p since I did not have 720p checked off. So obviously I have to check off 720p in the settings but make sure to uncheck it when I am done with the game cause all the other games will default to 720p rather then go up to 1080p.
Well, the jaggies come from the fact that I'm using a monitor and not a television. The lack of image quality is because the resolution of the video image does not match the native resolution of the monitor, which is 1920x1080 (1080p).
Now, I know true high-def aficionados will say that 720p upscaled to 1080p is not preferred, because of a slight loss of quality in the scaling, but in my situation it would be a drastic improvement, because it would get rid of the problem of not running in the monitor's native resolution.
More accurately, it's doing it... it's just doing it poorly. Different displays do it better than others. Reviews will usually talk about stuff like that.
