So, I flew in for my first ever GDC (Austin) and am wondering how many others on the boards have been to these events, what to expect, what to avoid, etc. etc. And hey, maybe we can even meet for lunch.
Yeah I've applied to every QA job in town it seems, but it's hard. Maybe if I can shake the right person's hand and look them in the face. And even if my terrible networking skills don't pan out I'm sure I'll learn some useful stuff from the sessions. I'm also curious about the show floor since I've never been to one of these before.
Lets all start our own austin based company called 'Auseeeome!!'
Or not.
Is there anything free going on related to the GDC?
You get to be in Austin.
What if you are already in Austin? I was wondering if there were any free seminar type things. After look over the website, doesnt seem like it though.

The only way you'd be able to get free seminars is if you signed up to be a volunteer for GDC (And yes, you would have to actually work). It's too late this year, but hey, there's always next year...
I attended the Austin one. Only did the career day pass, so I wasn't able to attend some of the design speeches, but I feel like it was a real eye-opening experience for me on the whole. I'm only an English major, so finding out that it really was specific skillsets that the companies were looking for was discouraging, but at the same time I kept getting the impression that QA was open to me if I commited to the work. (And knew enough people to find a position when it opened up)
Was anybody here in the room when Critical Mass did their open dialogue? Good stuff, that.
Anybody else go, or hit up one of the GDC in the other cities?

Yeah, I know the feeling. I was laid off back in June and I was barely able to start a job early this month. Good luck.

There's free booze if you can find the right party. :winky:
