I have to ship a large box full of books halfway across the world. It's very heavy. Other than air mail, what alternatives exist that are cheaper? It really doesn't matter how long it takes to get there, so long as it gets there in one piece. Speed is not an issue.

Shipping by boat is always relatively cheap, though i have no idea how to do that off the top of my head.

If it's full of books, see if you can do media mail with USPS -- I don't know if it works for international but it tends to make shipping books a lot cheaper, just make sure it's well packed.

There's no international version of Media mail.

    EDIT: M-bags. I stand corrected.

The departure and destination cites would be helpful.

As for using ships, I have done it. It is by the container and a common size is a 55 gallon drum.
