Looking for the something as good as Deus Ex

For me the original Deus Ex (PC version) is still the best thinking shooter I have ever played. The execution of a good story, depth in game play, "realism", freedom, good graphics and sound...

Only problem with Deus Ex is that after multiple replays there really is no more fun to be extracted from it

Over the years I have played tons of games. Some very good ones and also so pretty crappy ones and now I am looking for a new game to get. Perhaps the combined knowledge of the PA forum can point me in the right direction?

It does not have to be a new game but older than Deus Ex will be a hard sell 8-)

Platform wise I'm flexible with a 360, a PS3, a G4 Mac and a PC upgraded just last week (i7 870, Radeon 4890...) even though I have to say to keyboard+mouse is the preferred control method.

Apart from Deus Ex games I have on my gaming fun list is (the thinking shooter part of it):

NOLF+NOLF2 (Great scenery, game play twists and humor but linear)
Half Life (First half taking place in the "real" world, also to linear)
Half Life 2 (Puzzles to easy and to linear)
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. (Great, and the potential much more in games to come)
Project I.G.I. (I loved the great maps)
Halo 1,2 and 3. (To easy on PC. to linear and a lot of copy&paste used to make levels)
Max Payne 1+2
Thirteen
Far Cry
Unreal (So many great moments - did you guys see the guards playing dice?)
F.E.A.R. (Great AI and scary)
Duke Nukem 3D
Terminator Future Shock (AFAIK first PC game with mouselook)

Some games are on this list because of over-all quality and others are there because they a decent plus have something unique making them fun.

So what have I missed over the years? And is there anything recent I must buy? (I am getting the new S.T.A.L.K.E.R. plus Bioshock and Crysis is on my shopping list)

If enough people post I shall try and compile a complete must-play list 8-)

Bones heal, glory is forever.

The Nameless Mod for Deus Ex.

The only thing as good as Deus Ex is more Deus Ex.

I'm gonna go ahead and stop you right there. If this is really what you're looking for, you're going to be sorely disappointed.

I agree with mere_immortal; The Nameless Mod is your best bet.

Stalker: Call of Pripyat will be coming out in the future and since you were a fan of Stalker it will probably help scratch the itch.

Seconding The Nameless Mod. It's awesome. Every Deus Ex fan needs to play it.

Deus Ex 2 wasn't as bad as people say, especially if you just want the gameplay and don't mind the story so much.

Thank you all for the input.

I shall take a look at the nameless Mod for sure and the Vampire game as well.

As for System Shock 2 it is one which I have had a go at but it does feel it's age. Maybe I should try again.

Deus Ex 2. Oh, there is a tragedy. I still recall hearing it was to be both a PC and XBOX game and the promises made by Spector it would not suffer from it (which is sort believed knowing the PS2 version of Deus Ex was good. That man is gonna burn in his afterlife for a lie of that magnitude.
Come demo time it was very clear how much the XBOX had destroyed the game it was even so that the HUD settings in the demo was left in console settings (easy to see because everyone knew the Unreal-engine settings files).

Why are there only three FPS/RPG hybrids? Bloodlines, System Shock, Deus Ex. Are those kinds of games difficult to develop or something?

Freespace 2 is categorically and objectively the best video game ever made.

Also Mass Effect is worth a look.

Oooh yeah. You could manage stats in NOLF 2 so I guess that makes it RPG-ish. That said, these six games we've listed are loved by fans and there should be a lot more imitators of Warren Spector's work.

NOLF 1 is better than NOLF 2, and it's longer and has a great story. The second does have superior graphics.

Also play Thief 2 and Thief 3. Thief 2 has dated graphics but incredible gameplay and storytelling. Thief 3 has good graphics, and pretty good in every other area.

Thief 4 is coming out so you better be ready!

That's true, it was wacky.. but it felt rushed by the end. NOLF was perfect the whole way through, besides 1 or 2 small missions. That game had perfect pace, perfect storytelling and writing. The jokes didn't feel forced, they just kept coming. It just all seemed to fit far better.

Why do people keep saying that Bioshock is an FPSRPG? It isn't. Really. Unless you count "choose your plasmids and weapon upgrades" as RPG. You don't get stronger as you go, you don't level up, you get X number of Bioshock dollars occasionally and get to choose some alt weapons.

It's very light on RPG elements, but actually, yes, you do improve as the game goes. You get health and energy upgrades, your weapons become more powerful and you gain more abilities.

Just because it doesn't have 18 menu screens to handle your alchemy and your journal and your dishes and whatnot doesn't mean it isn't an FPSRPG.

It's debatable whether you get stronger as you move along. I remember early enemies taking only 2-3 wrenches to die and the SAME enemy hours later when I took every single wrench upgrade I could find took like 10 hits with the wrench. It's certainly a bit new and kinda fits the mold, but it's not the first option you should jump to.

Because the game can be described quite accurately as "System Shock 2 underwater with less inventory management".

My suggestion is to give SS2 another shot, and if you can't handle the bad aging even with the mods than play BioShock instead.
