Help with Word 07! Spacing is weird!

So, I've just started college late in life and I'm starting to type out my first papers using the good old Word 2007 that came with my Asus EeePC. Small problem.

Even at single spaced everything looks double spaced. Where this is REALLY bothering me is the "header" or what not. You know, where I type up my name, class, date, etc...

I understand the main parts of my paper should be double spaced, but the spaced header is driving me nuts. I've got the spaced set to "1". Is that double or single? Would "0" be single? So confused. Help.

do you have the insert space with return or whatever they call it? its under preferences/paragraph

if you have it selected it adds a space and makes it look like you have more spacing than you want

No, don't even see that option. And the spacing is set to single. I think it's fine in the body, it's just the header that looks all wonky.

Have you tried selecting all, then, clicking on 'line spacing options' (even if the check mark is next to 1.0) and checking that the 'Spacing After' value is 0pt? I know it's 10pt by default, and this is the problem I always come across.

    That worked. Thanks!

You're welcome! Drove me crazy the first time I started using Word 2007 too. :)

You may have to do this every time... unless you modify the Normal Style and modify it.

It's really easy, too. On the Home Tab, right click on the Normal Style from the Styles group in the Ribbon. Left-Click on Modify. Check the radio button for 'New documents based on this template'. Click the Format drop-menu and choose Paragraph. Change the spacing after to 0pt, Line Spacing to Single and check the box for 'Don't add space between paragraphs of the same style'.

Doing this will make it behave, from the get-go with every new document, as you'd expect.
