I'm almost on break, and the post in the Dragon Age thread got me interested in some old rpgs. I really wanted to get Baldur's Gate 2, but unfortunately direct2drive doesn't have it and Steam doesn't either. What are some other suggestions. I've been thinking about Fallout 2, and maybe even Deus Ex, but I'm leaning more towards a party based game that plays along the lines of baldur's gate. Something 25$ and under would be good, and my computer isn't a powerhouse, so something like NWN2 would be out of thought.
Basically, a game that plays like Baldur's Gate and is as interesting as Baldur's Gate, that I can find on a site like direct2drive or steam.
GOG.com is your new friend. Might and Magic, Fallout, Arx Fatalis are all worth checking out. If you live in America, try gametap for a month for Baldur's Gate and Deus Ex.
Planescape: Torment is a good game, if you like a game where you can talk your way out of almost every encounter. The old NWN and subsequent expansions are fun, too. While not exactly party based, the Elderscrolls series, particularly Morrowind and its expansions, are fun if you enjoy a first person perspective rpg.

Yeah, Fallout is a party-based game that is more or less like Baldur's Gate. You can't control your party members (and I don't really understand why not), but it seems like a good fit and it's on gog.com for $6.
GOG also has Septerra Core ($6, JRPG-style) and Realms of Arkania ($6 2-pack, old school European RPG where your characters would freeze in cold weather if not wearing proper clothing and your shoes would wear out, although I think this was alleviated in either the sequels or the patch).
Off of Steam, I'd recommend the Freedom Force games ($7.50 2-pack or $5 each, old school style superheroes)
Well, I've never tried a CRPG before but loved the combat in FFXII (which I've been told handles a bit like some CRPGs). Is Baldur's Gate a good gateway CRPG? Or should I try something like Mass Effect?

Daggerfall is even free.

As long as you're not too manly to look at a walkthrough, then yes. At least for me, BG1 was nearly impossible without using the walkthrough to see where all the quests and cool stuff is. BG2 is much better designed, but would still probably be fairly difficult without the walkthrough. I was addicted to it so I wouldn't know how BG2 would go without one.

BG is kind of clunky, although worth getting into.
The second game is a little easier on the new player, and probably the pinnacle of the entire genre.
It's quite possible you'd find Mass Effect or something much more accessible to start with, though, or maybe Dragon Age when it hits.
I decided to go with Fallout 2. I've never played it before. I was about to go with bloodlines but the creepy atmosphere and the fact I use a mousepad turned me off to it. Hopefully Fallout will last me to the fourth, and then Dragon Age, here I come.

This along with Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura are all excellent suggestions.
edit: also, everything here is great. They're even having a 10% off sale this month!
edit2: looks like jothki beat me to the Spiderweb Software suggestion! That's okay though, their games are great and deserve as much attention as I can give them.

...why would a mousepad cause you to skip out on Vampire? It's really, really fucking great.
Laptop mousepads are usually terrible for FPS games, or any kind of action game. I'm sure people will chime in about how they're the number 4 ranked Counterstrike player on the Eastern seaboard using a mousepad, but I've never had any luck with them.

When someone says mousepad I usually think the foam pad you put a mouse on, not the trackpad thing on a laptop.
If you haven't played it, there's really no other game that's worth the effort before you do.

Drakensang is $19.99 on Amazon, and completely fantastic.
It's like D&D, but ass backwards. If I remember right, it's a German PnP game that was made into this rpg. I fucking loved it for the time I played it.

If we're talking about european RPGs now, The Witcher has to be mentioned. Especially since it's only $15.

KOTOR man. You absolutely must try KOTOR. In my opinion it is a great gateway to more hardcore PC RPGS like Baldur's Gate.
Coming from FF12 this will feel right like home (similiar camera system and combat).
Vampire: The Masquerade: Bloodlines is great, and on steam for $20, but it more than likely will be on sale in the coming weeks for halloween.
Is that based on any actual info or just random hopeful speculation ( somewhat hoping the former since I'm stingy enough to want to avoid paying more than I have to to replace my discs ).

Seconded, and I would say Drakensang and The Witcher are the two you want to check out post-haste. They have extremely different styles, one being real-time combat and one being action-turn-based.
All of the classics are of course recommended (Baldur's Gate, Elderscrolls, etc.) but I find many of them lose their charm.

For the last two (three?) years, it's gone on sale for Halloween. It's possibly valve might co-op the sale with a left 4 dead sale. It's highly unlikely that Vampire will miss out on the same 50% off deal when they get to the end of the years sale.

Don't forget the Gothic games and the new spiritual successor, Risen. All of them are great. Well, I hear bad things about the third Gothic game so you may or may not want to mess with that, but the first two are definitely worth getting (and you can get em cheap off GOG.com. In fact, you may just want to go there and browse their RPGs regardless).

Both GoG and Steam have all the fallout games, and Steam has Knights of the Old Republic for 10 bucks.

I think he's talking about a laptop mouse pad. Games like that are a bitch to play with those. Combat succccks.
