Black Sabbath and Ozzy

edited October 2009 in Help / Advice Forum
Recently I got it in my head that I wanted to get into Black Sabbath. I like a lot of modern metal but never had much exposure to older bands.

So far I've only got the first two albums, self-titled and Paranoid. I really like both of them.

I want to know what to get next. Preferably, I want to get more Black Sabbath but I might also be interested in some early solo Ozzy stuff, if it's good.

Please tell me which albums I should get, and perhaps more importantly, which I shouldn't.

I am a big fan of sabbath, but not a big fan of Ozzy's solo work, it was all too upbeat hairmetally cliche-tastica. So I would say stay away from Ozzy.

You've got their two best albums in my opinion. Once you got your fill of Ozzy, check out Heaven and Hell. That's Black Sabbath after Ozzy left and when Dio took the reigns.

Motorhead, Judas Priest and Iron Maiden are also excellent metal bands from that era if you're interested in other older metal.

    Ozzy:
Blizzard of Oz and Diary of a Madman.

    Black Sabbath:
Sabbath Bloody Sabbath and Master of Reality are okay.
Heaven and Hell and Mob Rules (post Ozzy but great)
Possibly Born Again, if you like the heavier stuff (post Ozzy and Dio)

Anything post 1990 is a definite NOT BUY.

    Dio (because RJD is awesome)
    Holy Diver

    Judas Priest
British Steel, Defenders of the Faith, and Screaming for Vengeance

    Iron Maiden
7th Son of a 7th Son, Number of the Beast, and Powerslave

    Deep Purple
    Machine Head

    Orange Goblin
    Time Travel Blues

I was never a Motorhead fan.

If you're looking for other 80's stuff, check out our some of the thrash/metal bands, like Slayer, Anthrax, and Megadeath. Any of their early albums are worth getting.

I don't mind Sabbath or Ozzy but Heaven and Hell was terrible, just absolutely boring as fuck when I saw them in concert. The guy in front of me fell asleep about 3 songs in and we all left before the half-way mark of the show. You never know though, you might enjoy them.
Iron Maiden, Motorhead, and Judas Priest are great. Check out pretty much anything from Maiden pre-90's, Overkill by Motorhead(Ace of Spades is OLD), and Painkiller by Priest to get a taste of each.

Honestly, of the ozzy sabbath albums I like Vol.4 quite a lot. It doesn't have the singles power of Paranoid, but I feel it's an album that's better on an overall level. Not *quite* as much filler.

Go and get Heaven and hell, The mob rules and Dehumanizer. The new Heaven and hell album (The devil you know) is awesome when you get into it.

If you like Dio go for Long live Rock and roll and Rising by Rainbow, not like Sabbath but still fantastic. His solo albums Holy Diver and Strange highways are pretty great as well.

Another shameless Painkiller by Judas Priest plug. It really is that good.

I'm gonna throw in the The Lord Weird Slough Feg here, in particular the Traveller album. Some very Sabbath sounding elements on that.

Yeah in terms of Black Sabbath I actually enjoy the Dio era more then the Ozzy era. Check out Heaven and Hell, it's a pretty awesome album. You have all you need for Ozzy era Black Sabbath IMO. As for solo stuff, get Blizzard of Ozz. I have Diary of a Madman and No More Tears as well, but I don't like them as much.

There's an Ozzy Years Black Sabbath box set, get that to start with (or every song on it.)

The live album "live at last" is great.

I for one like the 90's Sabbath with (Tony Martin?) a different singer, but it's wholly not Sabbath sounding by any means. If you like Dio, then Dehumanizer is REALLY good if you are a Dio/Sabbath fan.

One album I must recommend to anyone is Iron Maiden's Killers. Better singer, better songs and just plain awe inspiring compared to anything else by them honestly. Don't get me wrong, Dickinson Maiden is good, just nowhere near as cool as Iron Maiden fronted by Paul Di'Anno who was more of a rock vocalist and less of a theatrics person.

    Solitude!

One day I was at Frys about 10 years ago with my buddy who was in the concert lighting business and I got excited because there was a Solitude CD... I had only heard them on the 1992 Roadrunner comp and was excited. It was a DOLLAR!

And my buddy was laughing his ass off... I was like what?!?! And he goes "Lyle you know Lyle right..." (I had been doing video work for his band Ghoultown) "Lyle's in that band!"

So yea, I know someone who started in Solitude.

They also do a cover of No More Tears on a really piss poor Ozzy tribute CD. It's not "bad" but it's not brilliant.

The Ozzy tribue CD as a whole is not recommended.

High on Fire, Matt Pike from Sleep's new band is good (not new like they just formed, new like since Sleep went away).

The other band with former Sleep members, Om, is weird but pretty good. Just drums and bass with shitloads of fuzz, with gregorian chanting style vocals.

Other stoner/doom type bands to check out are Kyuss and The Sword.

Honestly I find most of their first album to be kind of cheese tastic.

Paranoid is a great album, if you ignore War Pigs and Paranoid.
Master of Reality is awesome, Vol. 4 even has a few great tracks on it.

If you find you really like slower, heavier metal along those lines though, you should give some stoner rock a chance. Like, Kyuss, Electric Wizard, Orange Goblin even. Fu Manchu's first album is even noteworthy in this regard (later stuff lightened up/got faster), and the first two Monster Magnet albums (Spine of God and Superjudge) are so good that you wouldn't think it was the same band that did shit like Space Lord. Oh, and The Atomic Bitchwax's first three, the self titled, II and Spit Blood. After that they started to suck really hard too.

Oh of course I show up just late enough that all of my best suggestions are already posted. Serves me right.

Seriously though. Kyuss. Electric Wizard. Orange Goblin. Those Monster Magnet albums I mentioned. Those Atomic Bitchwax albums I mentioned. Really good stuff. The stoner rock movement really got away with doing a lot of stuff that was artistically inspired by the gloomy metal Sabbath was responsible for in the 70s, but with the cynicism of the grunge era, resulting in a lot of the sillier or frillier qualities of Sabbath's work (and a lot of bands of their era) being pushed to the side. It's a good genre and more people should listen to it.

As far as Black Sabbath goes, probably the best output from when Ozzy was on board is Paranoid, and the best output from when Dio was on board is Dehumanizer. Both are dramatically different albums in terms of musical style, but both are also excellent.

This isn't to say that other Black Sabbath albums aren't completely excellent, but both Paranoid and Dehumanizer give you a good idea of the two main flavours of Black Sabbath.
