Video game sales thread: September's done. Use the new thread.
In other news, Q Games (those dudes who shoehorn the word "Pixeljunk" in the name of all their games for no apparent reason) is getting pissed at the PSP. Reason? Piracy.
It's been posted and they 'shoehorn' Pixeljunk into the name of all their games for an obvious reason, they're all part of the same series.
That's odd. Wonder why the Wii version didn't sell as much? It's historically the top-selling GH, right?
I don't have the figures, but I feel like the 360 version generally sells best out of the gate, but the Wii version keeps legs and ends up selling the most overall.
I would wager to say this will happen with RB Beatles as well; the spread this month was 254k to 208k, so only a 50k difference and all of Microsoft's marketing has been pushing the shit out of the 360 being the lead console. I think next month, you'll see the Wii version outselling the 360 version.

Other than the fact that they all play differently and feature violently different art styles, sure.

I'm jumping in to throw some craziness in the thread.
Now Lego RB is playing the zombie card by having a dead Mercury in the game. *Rage rage rage rage* Oh wait...never mind it's Harmonix...if they do it..it's ok.

Oh, come now. If Lego Freddie ends up singing "Two Princes," I could maybe see some cause for ire, but I'm fairly confident they'll lock the rock stars strictly to their own songs.

I dunno, I stand by not really caring if rock star X appears in a game, but since Legoization makes things at least 47% more awesome, it's kinda neat.

Meh, I was just being silly. I'm waiting to see how they handle it...after the GH5 Cobain thing, they might lock him in to avoid the backlash that Activision got.

I'm almost positive they'd probably even lock in the guys that are still living.
Because a Lego David Bowie singing "Walkin' on Sunshine", even though Bowie is still alive, is massive amounts of fucking retarded.

If they've got the correct permission from the owners of the rights to Mercury's image, they can do whatever the hell they like with it.

Yeah, I think it's a given. I mean, Harmonix was already pistol-whipped by Beatles shareholders so hard that they even broke step with their old "Rock Band as a platform" stance and make Beatles RB a standalone island. Couple that with the minor media kerfluffle when the whole Cobain GH5 thing came out, and I think it's a given that from now on people will take pains to keep artists set to their own songs.
Though I don't know fully how Lego RB is set up, especially since the setpieces are pretty goofy to begin with (attacking giant sharks and octopuses, building shit with Lego blocks, etc.). I might end up getting the Wii version for my nephews, since it sounds absurdly fun in a family-friendly way.

But Activision got permission, it just so happens they had a retarded drunk monkey to sign the papers to use Cobain, but that didn't stop all that crazy stuff from happening. Especially after said drunk monkey realized she probably could have gotten more money out of the company.
Also even if Activision did get the rights to use Cobain without any of the crazy backpeddling by said rights holders and they didn't throw a stink about it, RB fanboys still would have thrown a rage fit cause hey, it's Activision and they are the devil.
Oh hey, and I just remembered that Beatles RB was a full $60 on Wii as well as PS3 and 360. The higher price makes that version's performance last month even more impressive. I always felt like Beatles + Wii was the perfect synergy of demographics. And advertising for both that and GH5 will definitely continue throughout the holidays, so I wouldn't be surprised to see both continually pop up in the top 20 through December or January.

Yea, Activision really is...there is no denying that.
As far as Beatles: RB...I'm sure that will continue to sell well for quite a few months through the holidays and some after. Beatles are awesome and popular and all that jazz.
Not sure how well Lego Rock Band will sell...I've already witnessed throughout the RB forums/other places on the interwebs, that many many MANY are posting quite happily how they are going to do all they can to not buy it and just get the code to export the songs.
Not sure how that will effect the final sales figures. :?
That's odd. Wonder why the Wii version didn't sell as much? It's historically the top-selling GH, right?
Top selling GH3 and WT and I think Aerosmith for a while (until the 360 version was price-cut to $8 with guitar). Metallica was top selling on the 360 iirc, followed by Wii. I can't remember about Smash Hits but it sold so shitty across all versions I don't think it matters what the ranks are.
So what's up with Gh5?
I think the most "hardcore" following of Guitar Hero are 360 owners. The ones that visit score hero, and FC everything on expert. I think this section of the market is most resilient to Guitar Hero brand fatigue, whereas I think the mainstream audience of GH is getting worn down quickly. I think that the hardcore following on the 360 is enough by itself to eek its sales up above the Wii version, just like with Guitar Hero Metallica.
I think there's a chance that GH5 will still do okay sales in Nov/Dec on the Wii, but falter some on the 360 (relatively speaking), since the 360 owning Guitar Hero fanboys all bought the game up front at release, both because they love it so much and also to make good on the Van Halen deal, while subsequent months on the 360 sales will fall quickly. The Wii sales will fall too but I don't think it will be as drastic.
So they'll need to buy a new copy to get said codes
That's a sale.
I imagine there'll be a ton of used copies at GameStop in about a week, though.
Are the codes on packaging?
I ask because I know a lot of people rented Rock Band in order to import RB1 songs when they only had bought RB2. (thereby importing RB1 songs into 2 withotu paying for RB1)

I know that there will be an influx of purchasing then returning, but I know down the street from my house is a Movie Gallery who keeps the books in the cases they have on display thus making it easy to grab said book and copy the code down.
Now I know it's a unique code and all, so only one person could do that, but you take one or more people doing this per movie rental place and it adds up.

It's probably an insert in the manual or on the back of the manual; it's a different process than RB1. Everything since then has included a one-time-use only code to download a giant DLC pack of all of the on-disc songs from that specific game or track pack.
I suppose if you're lucky, you can pull a free code from a rental copy or a used copy of Lego RB that somehow a person foolishly traded in without using the code. I don't think that'll be widespread, though.

Yeah, that's not applying this time.
They're doing it the same way they do the Track Packs, but with an added fee. On the back of the instruction manual is a one-time-use code. You need this in conjunction with a $10 licensing fee.

The code is expected to be on the manual a la RB2. Some are planning to go and rent it and use the code to do the import process.
EDIT:
Well...
To differentiate myself, the one-time code is to be used to actually get a 'real' code for exporting/importing. If LRB truly exports the same way that RB1 did, the process should work thusly:
Enter the manual code on a website as was done with RB2. Then you are e-mailed a proper code for the console of your choice. Enter this code and it will take you to a 'page' (or maybe just a section in LRB itself) to buy the export key for ten additional dollars. HMX has said the export process is then similar to RB1 so that the songs should copy individually.
Expect complications.... And (more) internet rage.
Still, I can see a lot of LRB copies being bought and sold back quickly.
Buy it for $60 to get all the songs*, then sell it back immediately for $35 or whatever Gamestop usually takes for games within a week.
It's like getting a ton of songs for $25.
*as I understand it, you can't export/import all the songs, just like the vast majority (>90%?) of them
Nope, they're not pulling that Guitar Hero shit. You get to export all of them.
And it's $50, with a $10 export fee, so really it's like a full priced game.

I'm curious how they talked the Hendrix estate into allowing them to export Jimmy's song without his virtual persona to sing it. Maybe they've finally lightened up a bit.

Interesing and valid point, that could very well be part of why the fee is higher this time. Either good on them, it should be a fun song.

To be honest, I think part of the GH:WT deal was because the Hendrix estate was still leery after GH1 and Spanish Castle Magic.
So, after 17 months and 6.67 million sold in the US, Mario Kart Wii fell off the list. Not only did it fall off from the top 10, it fell off from the top 20 as well, though admittedly, its sales last month (120k) were below the sales for this month's #20 (132.4k).

It originally had vocals, but they were laughably bad, so they were removed.
The final game was just an instrumental.
Incidentally it was one of the better songs in the game for this reason!
