didnt see a thread about it so here we go

from wikipedia:
Metro 2033 is an upcoming action-oriented video game with a combination of horror, survival, RPG, and shooting. The game is based on the popular Eastern European cult novel Metro 2033 from Russian author Dmitry Glukhovsky. It is developed by 4A-Games and will be released in 2010 on the Xbox 360 and Microsoft Windows(though originally announed for Windows and PlayStation 3[1]). In 2006, when the game was announced, it used to have the subtitel The Last Refuge but Publisher THQ removed it. A first Trailer[2] came along with the announcement.

latest press release:
THQ Inc. today announced Metro 2033™, a new first person shooter for Xbox 360® and PC based on the best-selling Russian novel of the same name by Dmitry Glukhovsky. Developed by Ukrainian studio 4A Games, and built with the cutting edge, proprietary 4A Game Engine, Metro 2033 is set to deliver a gripping, atmospheric experience. The PC version supports NVIDIA® PhysX® technology to enhance the incredibly realistic worlds and provide even more immersive gameplay. Metro 2033 is scheduled for release in early 2010, and the first trailer is available to view on the official website at www.Metro2033Game.com.

"Metro 2033 will plunge gamers into a terrifying vision of the future," said Richard Williams, vice president of global brand management, THQ. "4A Games have worked closely with Dmitry Glukhovsky to deliver a unique game world, a compelling, cinematic story and an incredible, atmospheric experience to rival anything in the category."

“Metro 2033 boasts some of the most advanced graphics and PhysX effects we’ve ever seen,” said Ujesh Desai, vice president of GPU business at NVIDIA. “From what we’ve seen so far, this will be a showcase PC gaming title for 2010!”

Is there anymore info on this?

Maybe it's the high I'm riding on Fallout 3 atm but this looks brilliant. I'd definitely like to hear/see more about it.

Watched the trailer for this last night and I predict two things:

    1) it will be packed with bugs from start to finish

    2) it will be awesome regardless.

Get very much a STALKER/Fallout feel from it, which can only lead to good things.

Checked out the Wikipedia page on the author who wrote the book this is based on. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dmitry_Glukhovsky

Very light on plot details, but I'm intrigued nonetheless. Hopefully the social commentary isn't lost in the translation to interactive storytelling. Also, 'It's Getting Darker' sounds awesome, I'll have to check it out.

Maybe it's because I watch too much Daily Show and they spotlight foreign authors a lot but it always makes me happy to see talented people from non-USA/UK get a shot at success.

Anyway yeah It's Getting Darker sounds cool too. Maybe it's the Russian setting that makes this sound fascinating to me. We always see US/EU post-apocalyptic settings (also Japan, but those are usually of the cyberpunk neo-Tokyo style settings) and rarely of like Russia, Eastern Europe, Africa settings. Well, I suppose STALKER is Russia but I've never played that.

    Something I probably should remedy.

Yes. If you like the look of this and have a PC that can run it, play STALKER.

Hoo boy. I sure do love me some Eastern European games, and the cross-breeding of post-apocalyptia and exploration-or-the-unknown/wierd-shit-happening is just delicious. I just hope that it isn't some linear stage-based ordeal but has some open-world stuff, even if it's confined to only various areas like STALKER.

Looks interesting, but is this going to be a straight-up FPS? Or will it be more of a first-person RPG like Fallout 3 and STALKER? If it's the first, I'm interested, but if it's the second, I'll be fucking giddy.

    Well the OP says

    whatever that means.

I really hope it leans toward Fallout 3 and less towards like...Half-life 2. I love me some Half-life, but there's a level of immersion I've gotten with Fallout 3 that I never really felt in Half-life 2. I mean...the Dunwich building alone freaked me the fuck out more than anything in HL2. I'm a gigantic pussy though so that's not saying much.

Even if it's less than Fallout 3, more like what I've read about STALKER that's perfectly ok. I can live without VATS though it's nice for how clunky the shooting is in Fallout 3; it's made me a complete idiot when I try to play Halo because I forgot how to aim on my own. :(

With a release date (supposedly) of next year hopefully we'll start seeing more info on the gameplay.

    Second, I think.

But the first was like 3 years ago; and the last footage shown prior to this was over a year ago.

Given that it's supposed to be released next year I think it was probably a good idea to re-announce it.

I think the announcement was more to do with the fact that THQ is now the publisher. And hey, they took a years-overdue eastern-european game like stalker and churned out a gem.

I'm looking forward to the book and the game.

This sounds funny, but what really caught my eye towards the end of the trailer was a lone wind turbine sticking up out of the ruins, presumably providing power to the metro settlement below. It's little details like that that get me. One of the main things that bugged me about Fallout 3 was (and I know, it didn't go for realism) that you had settlements and people and not one hint as to how they were powered and fed.

I get the feeling that this will feel a lot more like STALKER than Fallout 3.

    Another preview of the game:

    http://www.joystiq.com/2009/11/16/impressions-metro-2033/

I got a little bummed at the "10+ hour" comment until I realized that 100+ hour games like Fallout are not the norm.

It's funny though after finishing fallout 3 I decided to do a playthrough of Halflife 2 because it would be so "quick".

Anyway, game still sounds good, any thoughts people had that it would be a STALKER-esque sandbox game should be gone now. It's pretty clearly a linear FPS with some inventory management.

I hate to keep comparing it to halflife 2 but well...HL2 is one of my favorite games so that's clearly not a put-down.

Well, there goes most of my interest :(

I loved STALKER, and I love post apocalyptic settings in general, but it was the open-world aspect that really hooked me. Give me a harsh world, lots of ways to customize my character, a host of interesting weapons and quests, and fill it with some interesting characters and frightening monsters with decent AI and I'll be happy forever.

Awww, only a 10+ hour campaign mode? Had such a great STALKER vibe, too. Of course, it doesn't necessarily mean the game won't be good, but the idea of wandering a radioactive Russian underground full of mutants and hazards really hit some right buttons. Too bad. Although a whole game of the underground labs from STALKER would be cruel, incredible, and mind-breaking all wrapped together.

Of course, if it has people from the STALKER team maybe there will also be potential for mods which magically change the game from something potentially good to fantastic? Regardless, developers from Eastern Europe definitely deserve more love. If nothing else, hearing people speak in Russian all over the place just does something magically immersive.

I could definitely live with a corridor crawler + post-apocalyptic future + Aliens "they're coming out of the walls!" + an Eastern European aesthetic behind everything.
