Oh man that trailer looks so sweet. The part in the review about being able to use stealth and plan your attacks gave me a huge boner. I'll definitely be picking it up for 360 sometime soon.
I didn't even know this was out this week. I went and checked some of the new trailers and stuff, and holy shit. Am I right at thinking this is a cross between Stalker and FEAR?
So it's looking. The guys that made the X-ray engine for Stalker are behind this, so it's definitely looking like a more Stalker-y take on an otherwise traditional FPS. Yet more proof that 2010 is fucking awesome so far. Trying to avoid reviews so I don't have anything spoiled for me, but tomorrow can't come quick enough.

YEEEEEEAAARGH!
I am sorely sorely tempted to run a simultaneous Let's Play of STALKER: Clear Sky for immediate viewing and one of Metro 2033 to be released after a month or two.
Look, I know it will be hard, but if this game is awesome, I really need everyone to band together and not talk about it here. Call each other on the phone or something. Just don't talk about it here. Where I can read it. Do it for the children.
It's a shame Andrew W.K. decided to have a full band show tomorrow night. I want nothing more than to play this.

I'll probably end up buying this, although i wish i would have preordered it for the 10 bucks off from gamestop.
My love of all things russian is too great to pass this up in the end me thinks. as well as i'm sure every sign will allow me to stop and read using my terribly stumbling grasp of the language.

I'm really digging this so far. It combines the setting of STALKER with a more cinematic experience ala Modern Warfare or HL2. The graphics are also top notch and I can run everything in DX11 with full settings and no slowdown. Not something I can say for ARMA 2 or even Crysis. Really looking forward to the rest of the game.
I love the idea of using ammo as currency. Also how military grade ammo is more valuable. It doesn't just tell you its military grade either, you discern it by looking at the quality of the shell that you pick up. Awesome.
What you just said is making me consider skipping all of my previous obligations, save AWK, for tomorrow.

That's what the tutorial says about it, anyway.
edit: Alt-tab works like pro as well.
"The Station" being your home has a very Rapture/Vault like feel to it. It's isolated, tensions are high, and weird things go on with plenty of side stories to be told just by listening to inhabitants conversations.
Something cool I found is that to view your objectives, you press m which pulls up a light source in one hand and a binder in the other. Pressing left mouse flicks the lighter and right mouse raises the flame to the page so you can read your objectives. It's an immerse alternative to pressing tab and having text appear in the top left corner. The backside of the binder also has a compass which comes in handy. This game is getting thumbs up so far.
Welp, played an hour or so before calling it quits. It's going to be torture waiting until I get to my desktop again.
It actually runs alright on my laptop, but I want a Maximum Atmosphere Experience (TM).
I'd just reached the good part too; after fighting the bandits. That section was pretty surprising as you are fragile as fuck against bullets(Normal difficulty). Good thing I had the ball bearing gun though; it's pretty badass and, more importantly, quiet. I got robbed by the hooker so couldn't afford a silenced gun.
The visions I started having at the "graveyard" were pretty neat.
It's weird that the review complained about enemies soaking up clips, they seemed to go down pretty quickly to me. Though I guess it's hard to aim with a big 'ol controller.
Oh, and change the language to Russian as the English voiceovers are laughable.
A russian-esque game like stalker? How can I say no? I'm almost done downloading it maybe I'll post my opinions on it if I can stop playing long enough.
The AI looked pretty retarded in a lot of the gameplay videos I watched, how is it?
Well, the basic monsters pretty much just jump and rush at you, but I ran into some kind of rat creatures which popped in and out of tunnels to attack me.
As for the human enemies, they seems fine enough for a linear game; they'll use cover and try to flank and all that. The game has a stealth mechanic based on light, so they're a little bit blind at times. The lethality of their weapons seem to make up for it though; I tried run and gunning and promptly died a couple of times. In the end I picked off a patrol with my pneumatic gun before getting in closer.
This was only the one encounter, and against bandits so other doods might be more clever.
Just posted some impressions of this in the week o games thread. In short, I'm loving it so far, has almost a Starbreeze vibe to it. The voice acting is better than I thought it could be, and the graphics are amazing barring animation hitches here and there. The shooting is fun, but nothing new.

The AI for human enemies seems to alternate between pretty good and being dumb as bricks.
I'm enjoying it quite a lot, though. It looks really nice while running much better than I expected, being completely playable at 1920x1080 in DX9 at high with my 8800GT, and it isn't extraordinarily buggy like I tend to expect from developers from eastern Europe.

Ha, so my friend was playing a section where (vague spoilers, I guess, but I haven't played the game)
tunnel cave-in occured
just as an earthquake hit our area, and then his game crashed out. Most realistic special fx ever.
Does anyone have any console impressions? More specifically, how it looks compared to the PC version? Because I'm afraid this game will eat my PC alive and then spit it out.

Eurogamer review played on 360 version - screenshots all taken from that version too. Was obviously designed for PC first, but by all accounts an excellent port.
Who'd expect the Russians not only to make an excellent pc game but a solid port as well?
Plan on picking this up soon, but I'm still playing through the Stalkers.

Yeah, I seriously cannot hold back; must install now. I can hold off on playing Call of Pripyat, but Metro 2033 and Call of Pripyat? I'm just a man. I have needs. I doubt my planned LP will suffer for having played the game already.
I'll be interested in reading reactions from STALKER veterans. Jim at EG has the perspective but didn't really mention things I'm looking for. It sounds like it has some nice scripted sequences and atmosphere, but I wonder if it's over-designed for the rail shooter crowd or allowed to develop organically, kind of like the Agroprom sewers. I have played a lot of new AAA games and console ports lately, and I've realized how important the right pace is to me. Too much crammed in all at once actually lessens the experience.
My tastes are so specific and geeky and out in left field that I'll probably need to play it for myself.

I'm not entirely sure about being designed for the PC first, really. It plays fine and all that, but the menus are definitely pretty console and it uses a checkpoint system.
I really like this game. A lot. It's so polished compared to Stalker and some of the other Russian games I've played. I could do with a bit more freedom outside of the stations, but the atmosphere and story are so goddamn cool I don't care.

I don't know which was first, but if you read some of the tech articles that came out earlier it's clear they know what they're talking about for dual platform development. There was an emphasis on streaming architecture to work with consoles, but extra love given to PC video cards rather than porting over Xbox360 level tech. The game genre/style may be more associated with rail shooters on consoles but that's okay too as long as it picks up in other ways.
East Europe has always been 5-10 years behind the West in some ways, both the genres they love and develop for and the polish. Maybe this is the first sign they are catching up to the current AAA design process.

The PC version definitely looks better. I just hope I can get the game to look that good and run well.
I have a C2D E6600 (2.4Ghz), 4GB DDR2 memory, and an 8800 GTX. It seems like it should be fine, although my PC is starting to show its age with new games. The "optimum" requirements for Metro 2033 are insane, and the recommended requirements want a Quad Core. My CPU is definitely hurting me.

Well I'm done. Its good but I don't really think its worth 50 dollars because its too short. I want moaaarr. It looks like there may be alternative endings but I have no idea how to get them.

I'm not saying that the PC version wasn't a priority or anything, but there are some very, very console things about the game's PC version. And I imagine they're there in the console version too.
