So, I've had the same hairstyle for about 3 years now, and figure it's time to switch it up. However, I really have no idea what to try, and I'd like to avoid shaving my head as I look younger than I already am,(extreme baby face), and I'm 17.

Lol stupid angle
Suggestions are welcome, I'm willing to try anything.

Go somewhere where you're paying $30 or so for the cut. Put yourself in the stylist's hands. That's their job. To figure out what will work for you. Going to Supercuts isn't going to get you anything good.
Better yet find a good barbershop. They specialize in male haircuts and will give better cuts, although probably on the more conservative side.
What kind of style are you going for? What kind of style of clothes do you usually wear? How do you want to look? What kind of impression do you want to make?
With some direction you will probably get better advice.
I normally wear shirts like above, and some faded jeans and sandals. I wear a lot of beanies as well. I'm not really overly stylized. And I'm really not sure what I want, so I guess I'll look around a bit.
I also really like faux hawks, but I'm like 99% sure I couldn't pull one off.

And I'm 99% sure fauxhawks are pretty out of fashion. If you wear a lot of beanies who cares what your hair looks like. Shaggy surfer or whatever that is should work just fine for you.
Classic styles are cool and all but definitely not for a 17 y/o kid wearing tshirts and jeans. Also as a general rule it isn't good to look at celebrities or movies for hairstyles for the average guy.
Now let me say this first: a barber (or even a stylist) in person will give infinitely better advice since they can feel the texture of your hair and see several other factors. Despite this advice go in to a barbershop/salon and say "I want to look more ____. What can you suggest?"
Looks like you have thin hair. Cut it to a short-medium length, shorter on the sides and a little bit of length on top with layers. Mess it up with pomade.
Beanies, t-shirts, and jeans? Something shaggy and maybe a bit funky, heavy layers?
edit: Fuck it, you're young and can get away with anything if you aren't working. Mohawk and/or bleach it to hell and beyond then insert whatever awesome color you want. You probably will have no other time where you can do this.

Yeah, but that's not by any means guaranteed to look good.
Very occasionally I'll wear peacoats (SP?), a scarf, some nice dress pants and shoes to school, but usually only during the winter and when I don't have to work (So like, 2-3 times a month), if that matters.

Like I said, flip through some magazines and pick out some cuts you like. Take 'em to a decent stylist and see what they think. Also, do you have any friend who have great haircuts? Ask where they went and who they see.
Find a hair style that fits the shape of your face. This is crucial.
Also, never get that bowl cut again, because it seems to hammer down your age by about four years. I would have never guessed you were seventeen if you didn't tell us.
Certain styles highlight certain features of the face (i.e. strong jawline, round face, etc.), but only work if you have said features.
If a skinny teenager got a haircut tailored towards a dude with chiseled features in his 20's, it's going to look horrible. On the flip side, a teen has more freedom with the outrageous haircuts which would make a normal working man look like a doof.

This thread is relevant to my interests since my hair looks really similar to yours and I'm quite sick of it. Post some more pics when you get the mop top chopped.
as others have said in the thread, never have your hair how you have it now again, it makes you look 12, not your face so much.
i'd say you have an oval face, so keep that in mind while browsing haircuts. an example of hair styles for faceshapes, although this is for girls since i am a girl. i have a roundish face, so if i cut my hair above my chin, i look like my head is a pumpkin, but i can wear my hair long without looking like i have a horse face like a woman with an oval face would.
i'd say try and play with pushing your bangs kind of to one side instead of the straight fall down your face right now, it does you no favors. talk to a stylist and tell them what you dislike about your hair. does it not lay flat on the sides and all that. and make sure he/she knows that you no longer want the hair helmet
Whomever decided mohawks should come back in fashion needs to be shot. I've seen at least ten pre-teens and several teenagers sporting mohawks. Ugh. Just go to a barber, not a stylist. Try to find some hole in the wall barber shop with the old barber pole on it still. Those guys are the best and can give you a straight razor shave, if you've got enough facial hair for it to be worth it. Though, considering you said baby face... I doubt it.

I've not shaved for a week before and nobody noticed, so.
Yes, if you're a man you go to a barbershop, where the barbers know how to cut men's hair. Don't go to salons, they basically just cut men's hair using techniques intended for women, which comes out looking awful.

The only barber shops we have are like one man middle of nowhere places, is that still okay?

I live in middle of nowhere, TN
Looks like that's the only option you got.
Whelp, I'll head there in a couple of weeks and get a haircut going.
I'll post some pics afterwards, still gotta decide exactly what I want however.

What the fuck? You do know that men and women have the same hair... right? You also know that to get a license you work on both men and women, right?
Guess not.
That isn't to say a barber will fuck you over.

Real men have no issue going to a salon, and you'll get a good cut almost every time if you go to someone worth their salt.
yeah, if you go to someone who knows their craft you can get a great guy haircut in a salon. also, mohawks are awesome but require a certain kind of attitude to pull off, otherwise you come off pretentious as hell
if you go to a barbershop they will give you a hank hill type haircut, which if that is what you want go for it, but the thing for dudes your age now is generally a bit of shag

This is one of the most absolutely wrong statements I've ever seen on these forums. Please don't offer advice unless you have a modicum of an idea what you're talking about.
No one is telling him to go to "Geraldine's Beauty Parlor". Barbershops are good if you want a very basic, very classic men's look. If you want something with a degree of modernness to it, you're going to want to go to someplace a little more up to date. I'm not sure where you're from, but here (Portland, Oregon) there are dozens of salons where you can get an amazing men's haircut.
Yeah, the advice about barbers here is kind of mystifying to me. The barbershop in my town is atrocious, and I'm not really sure you can even have any input as to how they cut your hair. It's an assembly line sort of place, and neither the nice barbershop pole out in the front nor old age seem to have given the guys any amazing haircutting talent.
What I'm saying is: if you go to a barbershop you run the risk of looking like a freshly shorn military man. If you go to a nice salon, you can tell them any sort of style--yes, even the classics--and they will most likely be able to give it to you.
I've had terrible haircuts from men, and terrible haircuts from women. At salons and barbershops.
OP, just experiment. The best part is it grows back, so do whatever you feel like doing and if it doesn't work out then it doesn't work out. The first time or so might suck getting picked on if the style you pick doesn't work, but you'll get more comfortable with trying things if you just do it.
Grab a picture of a haircut you like and take it in, it's the best way. It shows the stylist exactly what you want and any good stylist will be able to cut it to suit your face as much as possible. Sometimes a style just isn't meant for your features, but you'll never know for sure until you try.
Finding a proper hair salon is crucial, as long as you don't mind spending a little more. I think its worth it though, since its better to come away with a haircut you really like, as opposed to one that is merely adequate.
Anyways, judging from the vibes I'm getting from your picture, I say you go for the "cool nerd guy" look. It would go well with your relaxed wardrobe.
Well, you can add that to the bunch of photos you will bring to the stylist. :P He/she should be able to advise you about whether or not you can pull it off, whether or not you can do it in the first place and, if you can, how to keep it that way.
Most of the time I trust a woman cutting my hair over a guy anyways
My hair's been cut by a dude all of two or three times in my entire life. Yeah, didn't come out well on any of those occasions. Most of my life, it's been my mum (one of her many jobs was as a hairdresser). Over the past few years, I've seen a lady hairdresser who knows what she's doing.
What do you mean? You think it'll just go straight up? Or just be flat?
Just be flat, it usually is.
Hmm well I'm pretty sure he used a little product to add some shape to his hair. Its pretty easy to do, and just takes a minute or so. Your hairdresser can show you how.
Try doing a google search for a good hair salon. Thats how I found my place. I just googled, "Vancouver good hair salon" and came up with a local message board where people were posting their recommendations for salons in my area.

You need to use some kind of gel or wax to get it to look like that, honestly. Nothing wrong with that.
The best advice here has been to go to a salon and talk to a stylist. You don't need to worry about going to a barbershop, if there's a good one in your area you can definitely check it out, but the idea that salons are "just for women" and don't give good haircuts to men is just silly.
Find an upper-class salon where the haircut costs, ideally, around $25 or more. Go in, let the stylist know what KIND of look you want. Short, long, flippy, layered, etc. Ask him or her for suggestions, let them know if you're okay with putting wax/gel/etc. in your hair or not to style it.
They'll be more than happy to help you, and you'll get a far better opinion from someone who can see your face and head shape as well as hair from all angles in person.

More guys need to wear great classic styles.
