As end of year exams approached, we've just been given our timetables. Study-wise, I'm in a good position - I study effectively and get good marks.
The only problem is, of the eight exams I have, three fall on one day.
The first two are very easy - French and IT - but the last one's English. As an overrall nerd I'm 'good' at that too, but needless to say it's a tiring essay-writing subject.
My question is: Despite ample study, am I screwed for English in that I will ineviteably be too tired to perform my best? Is it possible to sleep and drink enough V to get through alright?
The exams are ~1:40 hours long, with ~45 minutes between them. Exams are in ~20 days and I'll be ready for them.
Is this high school or university? If aussie universities are anything like NZ, they are quite lenient in what they consider outstanding circumstances and if you're really worried about it I would check with the exam organisers, and if you fail anything I would apply for some kind of special consideration.
Oh wait they're only about an hour forty? that's only like one and a half three hour exams, you should be fine. Just make sure you drink plenty of water and eat enough so that you don't get hungry, that's my biggest problem in exams. I wouldn't personally advise caffeine drinks, they can a) make you nervous to start with and b) make your effectiveness drop rapidly on the come down. I'm not sure if that would be significant over 1:40, but I definitely wouldn't take a bunch of caffeine before anything except the last one.
at my college, if you had 3 or more exams scheduled on the same day you could request to take one at a different time. see if its the same for you.
my high school and college were both like this. see if you can talk to the head of your program/academic dean/guidance counsellor depending on your situation. two finals in a day is pretty tough going and three would be pretty ridiculous
Like people have said before, see if you can get a study guide early, do some cramming ASAP and then before your exam just do a quick look over your previous notes and it should be fresh in your mind, as long as you've had some decent sleep
I done this before, realizing afterwards that I could have switched one of my test to another date due to the rule some people have already pointed out.
Truthfully it wasn't that big of a deal. I had my test spread out through out the day so it was more of a pain just being in school the entire day.

Same with UofT. 2 at the same time or 3 in a day were referred to as conflicts and you could get one rescheduled or something.
My university also allowed this, though I never used it! I had probably 4 semesters where I had 3 finals in one day. As long as you prepare enough before hand, it really shouldn't be too big of a problem. Get plenty of sleep too.
Like everyone else said, at my uni if you had 3 or more, you could reschedule one of them to a different day. I know a couple people that did that. JUST BE PREPARED IT MAY BE RESCHEDULED FOR EARLIER.

My univerisity physically wil not allow you to take that third exam. Our bylaws say a student cannot take more than two end of semester exams per class day. Look into that so you can give yourself some breathing room.

Not allow? So they just discount the exam and your grade will be based on everything else you've done in that class? That's fabulous! As long as you didn't need the exam to boost your marks that is.

No, they re-schedule it.

Get plenty of rest in the 24 hours before the test (last minute cramming won't help you at that point, and being exhausted will be a bigger loss than the overnight studying will be a gain, if you actually study properly beforehand).
Be sure to eat a filling, non-stomach problem related food. Make sure you are pleasantly full without having cramps or such crap. Have some stimulants (coffee, etc) but enough to get wired.
Most importantly, be able to switch gears. A sort of exercise related trick I used to ease test-stress was to carry a really really heavy backpack to my exams (filled with all of my books from each class). As the classes went on, I'd return to my dorm/car and drop off the ones I was finished with, thus getting lighter as the day went on. I'd be able to look at my various textbooks and remember what I learned from each of them as a brief review (usually with some important minor detail points that I knew I'd forget until just before the exam), which was super helpful. When I dropped the books off, it was literally taking a load off my shoulders and resigning that grade to whatever my skills deserved, leaving my fresher to take on the next challenge. Maybe it's just a mentality thing, but it kept my spirits high.
Most important thing is a good night's sleep. Cramming is about the worst thing you can do for a test, (and only slightly better than not studying at all).
As others have said many Universities allow you to move exams if you three or more within 24 hours of each other.
As someone who has taken three 3-hour long exams within 24 hours before, I would highly suggest you get your schedule adjusted. I had a killer headache after the second exam and was lucky I got to sleep 8 or 9 hours before my final exam. It it something you want to avoid if at all possible mostly for your mental health if anything else. My University had the procedure to move them, but I only found out about it the day after my exams.
If only one of those classes are what you would call "hard", then you have nothing to worry about. My finals in college were all 3 hours long, and I regularly had 2 back-to-back. The length of testing isn't an issue, the only thing that ever mattered was how prepared I was relative to the difficulty of the test. 2 hard tests in a row is a recipe for rape, but two easy tests in a row is a snooze-fest.
Sounds kind of obvious, but only you can judge how hard a class is and how much studying you will need for it. You don't need to freak out just because there are *gasp* 3 tests back to back. If only one is going to be hard, be glad you'll be done with all of them in one day :P
this thread has made me go check my universities policy on final exam days
though i do know a few poor bastards who had 3 physics/math/engineering finals on the same day, and our exams are 170 minutes long and for some those people only had a 10 minute break between them
By 'reschedule' do you guys mean I get to take it at a special time, or the entire year level gets moved? I doubt it's the latter, but I'll enquire anyway.
It turns out VCE (the highschool education system thingy in my state in Australia) has the following to say:
The new policy states that in order to "maintain the integrity of the VCE examination process, students will now be required to sit all three examinations in one day" (VCAA Bulletin, No. 57, March 2008, page 4).
I guess I'll just sleep tight and throw down some V right before English.
In my final year of high school I had 3 exams in one day, Advanced Higher Computing (3 hours), Higher Business Management (2 hours) and Advanced Higher Music (3 hours). The normal exam times overlapped so I had to be seperated from all the other students all day so that I didn't have a chance to ask them what was in the exam. It was exhausting but I knew it was going to be like that so I prepared like a madman and was totally in the zone that day. When I got home I had a few beers and went to bed in the knowledge that 3 out of my 5 exams were over in one day.
It can be done, easily, you just need to get in the zone on that day.

Thanks for the help so far!
Depends on the school. With my school I believe individuals sat the exam on the following day (not sure how that worked out in terms of getting the answers to people, possibly a second exam was prepared or at least the questions were changed up some)

But there will be no time to cram so you need to start revising now.
Like right now. Stop reading my post and start revising.
Really.
Go.

It is a grand total of 4.5 hours of tests, there are plenty of tests that are that long by themselves.
ditto here
edit: though our exams were like 3 hours available (tho not all teachers used the full 3 hours)

Not a big deal.
