Washington, DC — Grand Canyon National Park is not permitted to give an official estimate of the geologic age of its principal feature, due to pressure from Bush administration appointees. Despite promising a prompt review of its approval for a book claiming the Grand Canyon was created by Noah's flood rather than by geologic forces, more than three years later no review has ever been done and the book remains on sale at the park, according to documents released today by Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility (PEER).

Maybe I'll do both.
Puppy meat isn't white.
Sometimes I wish I didn't live in South Korea.
This quote makes me cry. Geology... doesn't... no. You don't fucking believe in science. It's fucking science.
God. I want to scream off a balcony or something now.
I only have to read something like this to reaffirm my belief that leaving the U.S. was the best decision I ever made. I mean, seriously, wtf?

Why can't it be the flood of Utnapishtim or the flood of Deucalion?
I hated the day in my Eurasia class when we read about the Flood myth in The Epic of Gilgamesh and the stupid fucking fundies said, "Wait...they have a flood myth too? So the story of Noah must be real!"
I really wish we could take all the people who think science opposes faith and send them to re-education camps. You can have both kids, but please try not to poke your goddamn eyes out.
Do you mean.... Xenu? Or Jesus Christs' dad?
Uh.
There is nothing wrong with religion.
This is about something else.
People can believe whatever they want.
As long as they don't stop me from pursuing my own intellectual goals.
If there is a barn, and I'd like to go in to see what is inside, and this dude comes in and says, "I believe there is a horse inside. But you cannot go in and see for yourself," then there is something wrong here.
Why is he preventing me from going inside?
Perhaps his faith in this truth he believes in is not strong enough, and he is afraid I will find something else?
Why did the Pope ask Stephen Hawking to stop trying to uncover the origins of the universe? Same reason: he was afraid.

Its distressing that we are willing to go to these lengths to avoid offending certain groups of people. I'm getting pretty tired of everyone pussy footing around, and not saying what they really feel. Political correctness is getting out of hand.
No, see, that's the problem with religion. That "something else" you point to is actually one of the foundations of religion: Blind faith.
There is no way you can be defending this. It simply not rationally possible that when presented with this scenario, any intelligent human being's reaction is "well, we wouldn't want to offend the religious, so I guess will have to suppress all the scientific facts in our federally funded park".
But there's a reason for that. The Bush Administration is full of stupid.
I can't wait for 2009. Seriously. Let's get the next 2 years over with, please.
I mean seriously....aggg. Sometimes I can't believe I live in the same country as these people.
Really? I would think that the current state of the country would make it abundantly clear that you share it with these people.
Way to be an idiot.
The Grand Canyon was made by erosion
Estimate the fucking age already, Park Service.
Actually, I believe that God promised no more flooding, so I think the next 'reset' is the world being destroyed by fire.
The harder the rain, honey, the sweeter the sun.
The Old Testament pretty much doesn't count.
I will kill his first born son as vengeance.
We are supposed to be baptized in fire though, I hope that doesn't hurt too bad.
I mean, fuck that looks fun.
religion. and accommodation of religion. fear of offending people.
You always were one of my favorites.
There it is, right there.
i think it's more accommodation of stupidity.
I think it's more the fact a religious fundamentalist got elected President and abuses his power to impose his views on the nation. Which is a very different problem from religious tolerance, no matter what Loren says.
In these people's minds they can't be sure that the geological age is correct, because god made it that way to test our faith. Since there's nothing you can show them to disprove their silly hypothesis (and telling them that their beliefs are wrong is perceived as religious intolerance) you just have to beat them away with a stick and call them stupid.
The real problem here is that we tell people "Believe whatever you want" and they go "Okay, great!"
Later, you have the same conversation and they go "You don't get to believe whatever you want, you have to believe in the things I do."
It isn't about being afraid of offending Christians. If it were, then holy fuck, the ACLU would be here demanding that we change all of the world's science books to prevent any further offense [/sarcasm].
It's about good-natured perpetuation of the story.
P.S. $25???
