Grand Canyon officially Made by God(tm)

Washington, DC — Grand Canyon National Park is not permitted to give an official estimate of the geologic age of its principal feature, due to pressure from Bush administration appointees. Despite promising a prompt review of its approval for a book claiming the Grand Canyon was created by Noah's flood rather than by geologic forces, more than three years later no review has ever been done and the book remains on sale at the park, according to documents released today by Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility (PEER).

Man, if I lived in the US, I'd totally Xerox up a whole stack of pamphlets giving precise, scientifically sound information about the Grand Canyon, and just stand outside the park, handing them out to tourists as if they were anti-stupid breathing masks.

The thing that bothers me is that it's called "Noah's" flood.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deluge_(mythology)

Why can't it be the flood of Utnapishtim or the flood of Deucalion?

I hated the day in my Eurasia class when we read about the Flood myth in The Epic of Gilgamesh and the stupid fucking fundies said, "Wait...they have a flood myth too? So the story of Noah must be real!"

If we keep this up God is going to flood us again, just you wait. I'm sure it was shit along these lines that made him go "Oh fuck it, RESET" back in Noah's day.

I really wish we could take all the people who think science opposes faith and send them to re-education camps. You can have both kids, but please try not to poke your goddamn eyes out.

    Uh.

There is nothing wrong with religion.

    This is about something else.

People can believe whatever they want.

As long as they don't stop me from pursuing my own intellectual goals.

If there is a barn, and I'd like to go in to see what is inside, and this dude comes in and says, "I believe there is a horse inside. But you cannot go in and see for yourself," then there is something wrong here.

Why is he preventing me from going inside?

Perhaps his faith in this truth he believes in is not strong enough, and he is afraid I will find something else?

Why did the Pope ask Stephen Hawking to stop trying to uncover the origins of the universe? Same reason: he was afraid.

No, see, that's the problem with religion. That "something else" you point to is actually one of the foundations of religion: Blind faith.

There is no way you can be defending this. It simply not rationally possible that when presented with this scenario, any intelligent human being's reaction is "well, we wouldn't want to offend the religious, so I guess will have to suppress all the scientific facts in our federally funded park".

Well when you tell someone "believe whatever you want to" and then they go and convince themselves that the grand canyon was made by god (and act on that conviction), you shouldn't really be surprised. It's the inevitable fringe you get in an environment where belief without evidence is accepted and in many cases admired.

In these people's minds they can't be sure that the geological age is correct, because god made it that way to test our faith. Since there's nothing you can show them to disprove their silly hypothesis (and telling them that their beliefs are wrong is perceived as religious intolerance) you just have to beat them away with a stick and call them stupid.

The real problem here is that we tell people "Believe whatever you want" and they go "Okay, great!"

Later, you have the same conversation and they go "You don't get to believe whatever you want, you have to believe in the things I do."
