The Guiding Principles and New Rules document is now in effect.
I've been out of the "gaming" scene (not that I can rightly say I was ever in it) for about five years now.
I'm looking for a new game my husband and I can play together. He likes real-time strategy, basically strategic adrenaline games (RedAlert2, Commandos, etc.). I like Baldur's Gate-type games, city builders, and 4X games. We both play Civ3, 7K2, and AOE2 together, but we're bored of these. We need new computers anyway, so hardware is not really an issue.
What games would you suggest and what hardware do they require?
Perhaps you could try spellforce (http://www.spellforce.com/). I only played the first part, which was a mix between role playing and real time strategy.
As for playing it together, well, that depends on how you guys play together. I know people who want to compete, some want to cooperate and some just have 1 char/game/whatever making the decisions together......
Red Alert 3 comes out soon.. Civ 4 is also out which is awesome, but if you are burnt out on 3, you may want to give that one a pass for a while. You might also want to check out the new Hero's of Might and Magic game. It is real time strategy like, but has some RPG elements..
Neverwinter Nights 2 was released recently, but if you want to play multiplayer then I think you'll have to wait a bit longer for some user-created mods of that type to come out. The single-player campaign is pretty good, but I don't think you can play it co-op.
There were 2 Rome-themed city builder released not long ago: CivCity: Rome and Caesar IV; I don't know if they're any good though
The big multiplayer RTSen now seem to be Dawn of War (there were two expansions released for it: Winter Assault and Dark Crusade, which add some new races) placed in the Warhammer 40K universe and Company of Heroes which is WWII-themed; I think they would work well for the two of you when played on-line vs. some other team.
There's also Defcon, though I hear that the gameplay gets repetitive after a while. OTOH it's only $15...
There are also the Total War games (Rome and Medieval 2 are the more recent), though I think only battles can be played in multiplayer, so it would be more tactical than strategic, I guess?
Rise of Nations seemed to be fairly big not long ago, and the "sequel" was released this year actually, it's called Rise of Legends and has some strange steam-punk/renaissance environment.
Star Wars: Empire at War + expansion is also a fairly big RTS title, though I don't know about its multiplayer.
I would also recommend the Knights of Old Republic games, as they are pretty good cRPGs which seem rather rare nowadays. Again, this is SP-only.
Oh, and I'm fairly sure that HoMMV is still turn-based, but that means that you can play it in hot-seat mode on a single PC (unless they changed something and I didn't notice it).
