Best credit card for racking up Frequent Flyer miles

My wife and I recently relocated to a different part of the country, away from most of our families, and we find ourselves spending a lot more money on airfare for visits. I'd like to get recommendations for credit cards that let you earn miles for purchases.

We both have excellent credit ratings and we don't carry balances on our existing credit cards, so I was hoping we could get cards that we can use for the bulk of our everyday purchases, paying off the full balance each month. Are there any recommendations for specific cards that will help us maximize our miles earned?

    well two schools of thought.

get an airline specific one. only good if you really only fly an airline or an airline family

or get a general rewards card. I have the capitol one one. its ok, it takes a while to rack up enough miles since most tickets are in then second tier of pricing.

i have heard good things about the chase freedom card and the amex one.

these are just no annual fee ones.
