[D&D 4E] Interest in Romero-esque zombie survival game?

Party would consist of 6 heroes (probably first come, first serve on requests, assuming there was sufficient interest to immediately fill the slots), with any 'extra' players just waiting until someone gets zombified to jump in.

Enemies would be large numbers of minions (zombified townfolk), interspersed with pretty beefy standard monsters (infected beasties and/or particularly powerful humanoids) and a few solos here or there ('here or there' mostly being when players die or otherwise become infected).

Game would start at level 1 (and any players jumping into the campaign would be at level 1), but experience points will be eschewed in favor of simply bumping-up characters to their next level after every encounter. Of course, there'd be a bit of a catch: every time you go up a level, you lose one of your per-encounter saves against infection - and you only start with 11 of them. After you've hit Paragon, you're only one teensy zombie bite away from joining the groaning legion (players would, of course, retain control over their character for one final encounter as they attempt to hack their former comrades into iddy biddy pieces).

Each player would be allowed to post up to 3 characters, and preference for jumping in on the action after a player's death/infection would be given to those who haven't had a chance to play yet.

I'd run the scenario until either every character is dead or infected, or until the players have managed to locate Patient Zero and used some technobabble to create a vaccine from him (Har har har. Good luck with that).

Would anyone be up for a 4E scenario like this?

    How would infection work?

Would any time you're hit count take one of your infection saves? That would really mix up the roles that would be useful - pretty much making ranged striker/controller parties. Nobody needs healing, as HP no longer matter so much, you just need to keep all the bad guys as far away as possible and kill them quickly.

Or maybe need to make an infection save if you get bloodied? Or make bite an attack that can only be made against bloodied players? That would probably allow the standard array of roles to be more useful (though defenders would still be in for a world of hurt).

Or perhaps you don't need any further mechanisms - just make the game completely without extended rests and just use the healing surge mechanism to track you as you get closer and closer to death? Every time you go up a level, you get the level-up hitpoints. Possibly remove the safety of unconciousness - once you're down, you're zombie. Would probably end up with a party of 5 leaders all trying to give each other surge-less healing to survive though.

My initial idea is to have infection spread to players mostly through special attacks (biting, puking, perhaps a few others) that have an 'Infection' ability that triggers if the target is bloodied after the attack resolves.

It's not a biggie when you're just starting out as a new player; you make a save roll vs the infection, and if you fail the save, you just burn one of your 11 automatic infection saves (free action Encounter Power) in order to not get diseased.

As you start climbing in level, though, infection becomes more probable as your infection saves are taken away from you.

So the dynamic will start out normally enough, and then begin to break down as character levels go up & up & up...

That just feels very Romero to me.

EDIT: Oh, and of course, players that faceplant and save their 3 Death saves will rise as zombies. That's just plain necessary.

Well, that sounds like a form of zombie-killing that I'm comfortable with. Are you planning on pbping or doing some maptools/ventrillo voodoo?

Just some old school PbP. I'll probably do up the battle grid in Illustrator and use Dropbox to post/update it.

I'd be interested in something like this. In fact, I've musing something similar if I had any DM/map making skill etc.

Well, there seems to be enough interest to get it off the ground and see where it goes, anyway. I think we'll do PHB 1 & 2, the Power supplements, Classes/Races from the Eberron and Forgotten Realms player guides, and optional races from both Monster Manuals. No Dragon Magazine or Insider stuff, no backgrounds (hopefully that doesn't put a sour taste in anyone's mouth?)

I'll start up a Recruitment thread in a few hours.

I'm thinking Battleragor fighter. Or a barb of some kind.

Something which has plenty of hitpoints and decent AC, at any rate.

Or a wizard...lots of Burst spells that target reflex.
