...I've only beaten Makai Kingdom so far, out of NIS's stuff. I own all of them.
I am definitely going to beat Disgaea first...but from what I understand, Disgaea 2 is cameo central. Am I going to seriously miss anything if I skip La Pucelle or Phantom Brave? I found the former boring and the latter annoying.
I assume that Disgaea 2 follows Disgaea plot-wise, so I definitely will at least complete one run-through of the game before going on.
Also, there are no bonuses in Disgaea 2 for having a completed save file for any of the other NIS games on the memory card, is there?
You do not need to have played any other NI game to enjoy disgaea 2 fully. There are lots of cameos... but they are just fluff and not really central to the plot at all. The story is completely independent of the first... and of all the other games. Have at it.
Also, save data from other games means nothing.
Edit: also... disgaea 2 takes place in a whole separate underworld, the plot does not follow at all.

Play Disgaea 2 and marvel at it's pure awesomeness. KKprofit is right, you don't need to experience Disgaea 1 in the slightest. The story in Disgaea 1 is arguably better, but the game is overall much more refined in Disgaea 2.
I had alot more fun with D1 than D2. But I'm not the type to endlessly grind the item world or characters. The story and voice acting in D1 really won me over.

Nah.
Edit: I don't know why everyone is so gung-ho about steering you away from Disgaea. Guys, Disgaea is still good, even if a sequel exists. Is NIS still selling it cheap?
I'm pretty resigned on playing Disgaea first if for no other reason than that I paid 50 bucks for it and it's been sitting there mostly untouched for awhile now. Actually, I did get to the end of Chapter 3, I believe.
I really just want to race through the story...I probably won't bother with the item world and dark assembly and shit but I want to see the story regardless.
Just wanted to know about La Pucelle and Phantom Brave, which I didn't really like that much.
Thanks guys

You should still finish La Pucelle and Phantom Brave, since both have better stories.
I think so at least. Disgaea's is good, but it's more comedy. LP and PB are dead serious by comparison.
My favorite game overall's probably Phantom Brave. It was weird at first, but once I got used to it, it was awesome. Makai Kingdom feels dated compared to how colorful Phantom Brave is.
Though Makai and Disgaea 2 are the ones I haven't finished yet...
My Roommate Says:
...I'm a grad student and I'll never do any work if I play Disgaea 2
...I'll never finish any of my other video games
...I have to take a raging dump
...those ninja pirates are donkey raping assmongrels
(etc)
Haha, I'm getting a kick out of this... you sound just like my roommate. (Folken) He's been avoiding this game like the plague for all the reasons above.
At any rate, good luck with whatever you do How are the other NIS games?
They were all OK mechanically... But I played Disgaea 1 first... and I loved it... the comedy is what made it so good in my opinions... I was kind of sad to see it missing in the other titles... at least not to the same extent.
Phantom Brave feels more strategic then the other games, becuase it relies on you summoning off items that enhance/weaken your characters plus they dont stand around forever and only have a certain amount of rounds to do their damage. I initially didn't like it, but by the end enjoyed the fact that I couldnt just summon every ghost out of my army right off the bat.
Disgaea 2 is a more polished Disgaea 1 with a worse storyline.
Disgaea 1 is the classic.
I felt like their werent enough classes in Disgaea 2, I liked how in Disgaea 1 it took longer to achieve some of the better classes. Nonetheless, all are great games, you can go at any of them and have a great time. I am kind of old school though and would probably tell you to play Disgaea before you play Disgaea 2 for the principle of it. Phantom Brave can be played whenever, and is definitely a favorite of mine, although the storyline is a bit sappy.

I actually played through about four chapters of each...I thought La Pucelle was funny but stupid for the most part, and I just thought Phantom Brave was some of the most boring nonsense ever, and I really, really hated the gridless system.
I disliked the gridless aspect of Makai Kingdom as well, but I really enjoyed the game - I personally thought it was even better than Disgaea.
But, opinions, opinions... Does Phantom Brave get monumentally better after chapter 3/4? Because I seriously hated the first few chapters.
What about La Pucelle? I think I got up to the big whale part. Does it do like a 180?

There are games where this is far, far more true than Disgaea.
Trust me.
Time-eating takes on a whole new meaning when the Age of Wonders series enters the fray.
I feel like I should go and level up ALL my items that are equipped. Is this an unhealthy practice?
Extremely.
It's also a commonplace behavior.
I don't know about Disgaea 1, but in Disgaea 2 I played through with very little item worldage and only one set of full-party reincarnations, and the balance felt pretty good.

Also, if you don't like those games up to that point, I think you're pretty well boned. Or they are. Or someone/something is.
Why should I send you a check for 20 dollars? o_O

La Pucelle's ending is worth it. And the final battle... ow.
And I can sum up why you need to finish Phantom Brave in five simple words.
Also, the hidden bosses are suicide. But the main story is great.

I would love a game like disgaea... only with the ability to download new chapters off the interwebs... A srpg that could go on for years...
I love you for your berserker description... when can we make babies?
