[d20 Future] Take a Trip to the Rim... (IC and OOC)

d20 Future - 'Take a Trip to the Rim...'

Progress Level: 6
Starting Level: 4
Stats and HP: 28 Point-Buy, take Max HP each level (you'll need it)
Character Sheets and Rolls: I'm a fan of Myth-Weavers and Invisible Castle m'self, but if it's a legit site I'm cool with it.
Starting Wealth: Assume you roll 5 for your starting wealth, with a +1 Bonus for each level above 1 (3), so 8 plus other pertinent Bonuses you have. If you're buying something and need to roll a d6 to decrease wealth, assume you roll a 4 (8 for 2d6). And please, no cheap tricks when doing purchases (if you know what I'm talking about, I'm talking about it to YOU.).
Starting Equipment: You're traveling on a military vessel, so things like regular Ammo, some standardized weapons, survival supplies, standard equipment, and professional equipment like Mechanical Kits, Surgical Kits, etc are all covered (for use in ship and on missions; personal supplies would be separate). If you want to make sure if it's there, just ask and if it would reasonably be on a new ship like this, then I'm a reasonable man.
Setting: It is the year 570 AP (570 years since the settlement of Persei Prime by a crashed colony ship sent from Old Earth) in the Alpha Persei System, a Planetary System of 187 Natural Atmosphere-Capable Celestial Bodies, 113 currently with (theoretically) life-sustaining atmospheres, 108 (more or less) colonized, 21 currently being terraformed to be habitable. You're all alone out here, your ancestor's colony ship sucked some 590 Light Years off course from Old Earth via a Warp Hole and depositing your branch of humanity on this remote and untamed piece of space, mostly cut off from communication with home and completely cut off from resupply or rescue. That PCs in this Campaign will be flying aboard the Needle, a modified Escort ship with a rare functioning Ion Engine (the Central Government severely limits access to Light and Near-Light Drives), going around the system and fighting crime.
Characters: Some, all or none of you are official members of the Government Auxiliary Planetary Police Squad, known throughout the colonized Planets as 'Fixers'. Fixers are the eyes, ears, and fists of the Central Government, dealing with interplanetary issues, assisting with new colonizations and any unfriendly local lifeforms, gathering information, keeping peace, and generally making sure the Alpha Persei System doesn't blow itself up. Fixers are largely autonomous, sent off on long term individual assignments or left to their own personal discretion to keep the peace. Those Fixers who are given their own ships will often hire other Independent Contractors with useful skills to assist them on their various missions. These Contractors can have long-term agreements or one-off jobs, as the situation requires. If no one wants to play an official Fixer, I can have an NPC fill the role and therefore limit your access to knowledge and equipment and screw with you greatly (I like this option).
Dangers: Pirates, Criminals, Rebels, Thugs, Gangsters, Native Fauna (and occasionally Flora), Asteroids, Radiation, Robots, Corruption, Strangers, Lead Paint, etc. If it's out there, it can kill you. Playstyle is Action/Adventure Heavy with some Intrigue thrown in for spice.
PCs: No Psychics, Magic, Aliens, or Robots. Mostly fair game otherwise. As for Archetypes, most anything goes, though you should be aware of the characters around you and the game at hand. For example, a Fighter Jock would be an entirely appropriate character for the Game, but I'm not going to do much Space Combat if only 1 or 2 characters would be taking part and the rest would be huddled in a life pod. I don't need much backstory, but if you could post a short paragraph or two of your character doing something it'd be appreciated (doesn't matter what; I don't care if they're buying groceries so long as you give a feel for the character). Please no more than 2 Submissions per person.
Universe Specifics: A work in progress. If you work it into your backstory, I reserve the right to make it cannon and twist it to my desires and whims.
Submission Closing Date: Sunday, December 6th, 11:59pm PST.
Start Date: After Sunday, December 6th, 11:59pm PST.

Let me know if you have any questions; looking forward to the game!

A d20 future game was one of my favorites from the PA boards.

I will eyeball your interest thread eagerly, but I am too terrified of the system to throw my hat into the ring right away.

I used to play d20 Modern/Future all the time, almost as much as I played D&D. I had a friend who really liked running d20 Modern games.

I would probably be into it. Have to refresh myself on the rules a little bit though. Firefly, Bebop, and Mass Effect are all reasons for me to live.

Hm.. I'd be up for something like this, but I'm not familiar with d20 modern/future. Is it modern or is it future? What should I be looking up? I may flip through whatever book you point me towards.

d20 Modern is the core rulebook, and d20 Future is an additional rulebook that has things like Spaceships and Laserguns. Anyone have the link to the d20 SRD?

    etc

    i see mention of cybernetics

i think the cybernetics were the worst part of d20 future, just because they basically fill the role of magic items and if one person uses cybernetics, everyone else has to to keep up :(

don't think that's got things like chargen rules at all, but if you're familiar with the process, it's more or less self explanatory

It's literally the same as 3.5, with modern settings. Future changes the rules up somewhat, and the individual hero rules are wonky.

For example, Fast Heroes who go Gunslinger are almost entirely impossible to kill.

The real differences are that money is an abstract system, AC is based on class level, base classes are based on a single attribute and Prestige classes start at level 4.

Oh. And guns. Guns, elves and space elves.

Modern is basically 3.5 with heavily revised class and wealth systems. All the combat and stat generation is essentially the same though.

You start out as one of six generic heroic archetypes (smart, fast, tough, etc.) each of which gets something every level, either a feat or a class feature and from level five or so, you can then branch out into more specialised roles.
The Modern system has been adapted for all sorts of sci-fi type settings, including a rather more steampunk version of the past and a couple of alternative futures.

I'm currently playing a cowardly war hero with an unjustified reputation for Jedi-hunting (he has yet to actually catch one, but he's still on retainer for it) and a drunken half-orc that has become the unwilling savior of a Devourer cult and their messiah mythology.

Maybe I should just play a space marine. Even it out.

The trouble with the Game that Shall Not Be Named is that underneath all the horrifyingly misogynistic, racist, screwball bullshit, there isn't one tiny shred of a spark of creativity to redeem it on any level; character classes are the same old low fantasy hit stuff, get hit by stuff, magic stuff, heal stuff tropes and there is no setting beyond a version of medieval Europe that Heironymous Bosch would refuse to paint and H.P. Lovecraft would refer to only obliquely, in the manner of an elder daemon of madness. It therefore doesn't actually qualify as a game system and so can't be referred to as one, even a "fucked up" one. In truth, it is far closer to a disease of the mind made manifest.

Then you want to start as either a Strong or a Smart hero and multi across to the other as you level.
Alternatively, if you prefer to dispense your beatings from range, you can go with a Fast hero instead of Strong and buy yourself a fancy gun. There is a sniper prestige class in there somewhere if you want to go that route too.

Ironically, Strongs are better than Fasts if your goal is actually hitting people with your guns, or qualifying for feats. Fasts have better bonus feats for guns, but their BAB is lower.

Techies or hackers are as useful as the GM makes them, usually. Field Scientists or robot engineers or the like are typically more able to determine their own usefulness.

Lets see... some things say stuff like "add bonus equal to smart level"... smart level? They mean the level of my character in the smart class? I assume at level 1 that bonus would be +1. Gotcha.

And what, if any, books besides the core rulebook would we be using?

<edit> Also, I'm creating a smart character here with 16 int. The way I calculated here I would get 48 points to distribute into skills at level 1 but can only put up to 4 in any one class skill? So I can have 12 class skills fully maxed out at 4 points each?
