Wow, I didn't give a care to Mirrors edge at all when it came out or was in the process of coming out. After playing it for a couple hours I'm hooked. I wish they could make other first person shooters feel as physical as this when you run around. Its adds so much to the game when it feels like there is a lot of weight to your run and jumps and landings.

Yeah, the only other games I can think of that have near that good body awareness are Crysis and Call of Juarez, neither of which get the feeling of movement quite as good

    Riddick. :P

    Then again, TAGES.
I sure hope one of you meant to say Dark Messiah. Because if you didn't.

Yeah, I forgot about that. Zeno clash too.

    From the old thread:

Must....fight...urge....to buy.....THQ Pack..... I've already bought half a dozen games (plus more if I cave to Evil and ME today)....damn you Saints Row 2, why couldn't I have bought you 1 month ago when you were like $9.
    I caved in...

I got Saint's Row 2 for my unused 360, and all the WH40k stuff...never played Company of Heroes and Red faction though. So I think it's worth it.

Plus Saints row on the PC should be fun.

Damn sales holiday set me back bout 60 Euros..could have been worse.

    JOIN USSSSSS!!!!

    SR2 is really fun.

I have to say I'm really enjoying BF2. Last night The US team spawned on an island with some boats so we could reach the mainland. Sadly out of 32 people no one could drive a boat decently and the Chinese ended up stealing our boats.

What happened next was a daring commando raid where my squad swam across and stealth capped a point.

    Mirror's Edge is pretty fun.

But dear god at the voice acting.

Also, I have some very serious loathing towards the whole "tattooed rebels with to'ly cool nicknames" thing this game has going for it. This game is just trying way too hard to be cool and awesome and streetcred-a-licious.

Well, it was made by a piece of EA which, even though it has made great strides in the last couple of years, is still an evil, heartless beast at its core. All the self-righteousness of the runners was pretty stupid considering you can knock a cop off a roof and Faith doesn't even go "oh no!" For all the cops know, you really are dangerous criminal and constantly running from them certainly wouldn't help that impression.

But no, kick that cop right off the ledge. It's not he's just doing his job.

Also, the cutscene style wouldn't have been that bad except for the story, the voice-acting, and, most importantly, the amateur Flash animation. Would it have really been that tough to track down a couple of people competent in the medium and hire them?
I do get the feeling that I might be the bad guy in this whole game. They never really say what is so corrupt in the game, and the city looks damn clean and nice to live in for being run by evil guys.

You need to visit Singapore some day. Or maybe Shanghai in three decades.

"Evil" is not quite the right word here. Neither "corrupt". "Illiberal" perhaps; notice the dubiously enthusiastic election posters decorating parts of the environment.

I mean, there are cops shooting at you just because.

That tends to imply the lack of elections, or the lack of popular support, or the absence of civil institutions, or even the absence of meaningful political change, which isn't really true. A clean, efficient state with minimal corruption or violent crime doesn't lose popular support that easily, for instance.

I mean, the practical problem with 1930s fascism was not that the trains ran on time; they actually didn't, and fascism turned out to be deeply corrupt. Now imagine that a careful government actually does "make the trains run on time", and there you have it. Benjamin Franklin only said that those who traded 'essential liberty' for security didn't deserve either; he never said it wasn't possible.

America and Western Europe are typically labeled "liberal democracies" in academia; in the popular discourse 'liberal' tends to be taken for granted, which is really too bad - it leads to the assumption that one's civil liberties can't possibly be under threat because it's the result of a vote.

Well, concerning corruption, whenever a group of people manage to obtain absolute power with no accountability, they will most definitely take personal advantage out of it.

    Yes, we know.

    Any idea why?

It doesn't seem to do much of anything, but it destroys the game if I turn it one and kick a window.

Edit: Hunh. So there's no way to make it function with my Radeon? Well, that's sort of annoying.

It seems like you should be able to task a dedicated processor to it, it's not like multi-core systems use all of them to run a game.

Because it's computationally expensive. When you kick a window PhysX will break it into tiny dangling pieces which rape your processor.

PhysX was originally a separate card with a dedicated Physics processor card but then Nvidia took over and implemented it into their own cards. Or something. ATI is shit outta luck because it gets sent to CPUville.

You have to remove (rename with .bak extension) one of the dlls if you have an nvidia card and it is still killing your frame rate. It tries to do it on the cpu otherwise. I believe it was physxCore.dll - the let's play on the forums is more specific. I did that on my play through, never had a frame drop with physx and still had all of the effects.

Jesus, what a needlessly frustrating piece of shit Mirror's Edge is.

Let's combine finicky, poorly responsive controls with level design that kills you for jumping a nanosecond too late or too early or a millimeter to the left or the right.

Yes, of course my character won't even try and grab onto the pipe right in front of her fucking face, she'd much rather plummet to her death for the twentieth fucking time in a row. Thanks!

the game could definitely be improved and it can be frustrating, but it's still a very good game.

you are just bad at it. there's nothing wrong with that, mind you, because it's hard to get good at it. but this is a game that you have to practice to be good at.

This is pretty much how I feel: it's a good game that has some extremely frustrating qualities to it that will hopefully be ironed out in Mirror's Edge 2.

Like, I spent ten or so minutes trying to jump from a pipe to a platform at the end of the sewer level. This was because I was pressing the move forward button in addition to the jump button. As it turns out, the jump only works if you don't touch your movement keys and only press the jump button.

And immediately after that section there's a fucking frustrating part with five shotgun wielding cops. Jesus motherfucking christ that was annoying.

On the one hand, Steam's holiday sale is always a great move because you get a shit ton of great games for dirt cheap prices.

On the other hand, it makes you feel dirty about buying anything on Steam for the next few months because you always think back at what could have been.
