And then the Grinch found the strength of *ten* Grinches, plus two.
There seems to be an unusual amount of malcontent spilling forth from our beloved boards. Bitching threads, hating threads, whining threads and anti-Christmas threads... and all this around the holiday season.
Well, no more.
Christmas may wear on you as you listen to holiday songs as early as Halloween. Hanukkah could be the worst week of your year. Thanksgiving may be spent trying not to hate your father. But they weren't always.
There was a time when the holidays were awesome. You loved getting off of school, opening presents and actually enjoying the company of family and friends. Hell, you may still love all of those things today and you should share that love.
This is a thread for your best holiday memories and stories. Could be that you got that Oscar Myer Wiener Whistle you always wanted or the time your long lost whoever came home unexpectedly.
Let us have it, SE++. Let the hate be damned.
One of my favorite Christmas memories actually took place in July:
Two of my friends and I were sitting on the seawall on the boardwalk in Ocean City, MD and got to watch the entire scene unfold. This rather large older man was strolling down the boards just enjoying the day. He stood about 5'10, was round, fully of jelly and had a shockingly white beard. He was also a bit red from being out in the sun.
We were about to make the obvious comment when this kid comes hurtling down the boards running as fast as he can, his father doing his best to keep up. Well, the kid gets to our jolly fat man, tugs on his shirt and freezes up. Jolly had turned around and was simply smiling at this little guy. When the father eventually caught up we heard him explain that "my son really wanted to talk to you and just wanted you to know that he's been good all year and wanted to know what your favorite cookies are."
The old guy, much to his credit, lets out this incredible belly laugh, leans in and tells the kid that chocolate chip are his favorite and that he should remember to leave out a carrot for the reindeer.
With that he waved and just kept on walking.

I got married on Dec 23, 2002, so Christmas and its environs are a pretty neat time for me. We had a big tree in the church and all the gifts were put under it. We saved them and opened them on Christmas morning.
Who could hate it? Screw religious origins.
and with kids it is even better
Also people tend to be less assholish to each other.
So Christmas is good times.

except for in parking lots
my church is doing the adven conspiracy this year. basically the idea is to give fewer but more meaningful presents and take the time and money that would normally be devoted to an orgy of stuff acquisition and channel into helping people out. i think it's a good idea partly because it's a pretty good Biblical principle and also because i am not nearly as into stuff as i used to be.
Would you be interested in giving crocheted things in exchange for money?
i first read this as wanting crotch things in exchange for money
That's not really 'giving'
What do you propose, sir

No one has EVER made that mistake before
You are the first
For realz
(for a few months after I started crocheting, I couldn't spell 'crotch' correctly on the first try)

More recently, a couple of Christmases ago I was home in MI visiting, and lo and behold my younger brother surprised us all by getting leave from whereever the Army had stashed him in the Middle East. I am still surprised that my Mom didn't pass out from the excitement, but we were all in tears just so happy to see him. Needless to say, I badly lost the NERF guerrilla war on Christmas day that year.

has made me cry?
oh hell yes it is
Well, I'd be giving and you'd be giving. So it's like...double the giving.
I'll send you a PM.
I want the dates that Mr. Man is on the East Coast.
If it works out, Chels and I can meet you somewhere between NY and Groton.
well it was new to me
i have same problem with horrible misspellings when it comes to the annual MDA Telethon i produce for my tv station
i always type it out "telethong"
not good when you are discussing the run down of the 14th hour with the national rep
This is probably going to be a bad one though.
will do
going to be out of town until Friday, but catch me this weekend
I made a card
I plan on making more, any suggestions?
i worked (for two days) as a telemarketer trying to raise money for the Police Benevolence something or other and I could not stop saying 'Police Brutality.' This was unrelated to how briefly I worked there. Two 8 hour days eroded my soul to the point where I could barely see.
Seriously. I can't stop grinning when I think about it.
to take the kids to later. honest.
"Think of it as Evolution in Action"
it is the only time of the year we are allowed to watch it. no matter what.
they play it on tv all the time, but you have to avoid it at all cost to keep the tradition pure
Don't?
I like old-fashioned Christmas carols because I'm a fool for polyphony.
I like egg nog beyond all reason. And fruitcake. And cranberry sauce.
I like a time of year when everyone is encouraged to be cheerful and warm.
I love the lights.
And yes, I'm a Hannukah stalwart, have been since I was a kid.
I quite sincerely like miraculous survival stories.
I also like fried food.
I'm the only one in my family who can remember which are the "loaded" dreidels; when I was younger and more malicious I would make sure to give my sister the one that never wins.

My heart stopped for a second
Don't toy with my emotions like that
all the Santa presents have their own wrapping paper that is kept in super duper top secret places
We used to do this all the time on Christmas Eve.
Now when Chelsea and I are driving from her folks place to mine (about an hour and a half) we weave our way through neighborhoods looking for awesome displays.
one of the nice things about working near the ridiculous mansions in Newport is the Christmas light displays are phenomenal
I'll try and remember to bring my camera the next time I'm up there
My mom used to do that. She kept the Santa wrapping paper and 'to/from' notes at work. She also had other people write out the to/from notes so I wouldn't recognize her handwriting.
Mom was smart.
