New or Noo?

SamSam Registered User regular
edited December 2009 in Social Entropy++
Once my English prof asked if anyone knew what the word novel meant.
I said new 3 or 4 times and she seemed like she honestly didn't understand what I was saying. Then a lightbulb flashed. Oh. You mean Noo. Well that's correct, yes.

So who's weird, me or the Ph.D?

Don't spell your version correctly and the other version incorrectly. Spell your version as "nyew." Faggot/jackass.

It's called the "yod" and it's a regional variation.

Listen to William F. Buckley to get one of the last examples of an American who used it.

He was trying to say New and he pronounced it neeoo. Since his professors PhD wasn't in "sounding like a douche" it took a while to understand.

I've heard people here say both new and noo.

Noo like Nu, the Greek letter, I think.

"New" with a bit of a closing at the end of the word.

Either way, I've not found anyone who would misunderstand either.
