Hey. I need a LOT of trippy/ambient music. My friends and I will be inside for a long time in a few days just hanging out, and I plan to be playing music the whole time.
I don't know if they're exactly what you're looking for, but you could try The New Deal or Shout Out Out Out. Those are links to CBC Radio 3, and have free streaming samples to listen to. The site is sometimes a little finicky, you may have to reload it once or twice to get the player to load.
do you want ambient as in no words? If you don't mind words, trip hop is pretty much my favorite genre of music. I recommend Portishead, Lamb (be careful with that link, because Lamb is also the name of a christian rock band -_-), Imogen Heap, Goldfrapp, Hooverphonic... I'll stop there.
You can also always see what's on the all-music guide for various genres:
God is an Astronaut <- this one is first in this list for a damn good reason. Sunrise in Aries is a spectacular song of theirs.
Boards of Canada
Infected Mushroom
Explosions in the Sky
Tycho
A friend of mine got me hooked on Why? and Tobacco.
Do a google search for "tobacco fucked up friends" and the first few results will let you sample the album, or you could just last.fm it if you wanted. I guess it was all done on analog equipment so you'll hear hiss and pops and stuff. It's definitely trippy, and the album ranges from fairly mellow to more upbeat. If you were at a party, this might be the music that was playing in a pot-smoke filled basement as opposed to the shitty hip hop in the kitchen.
Why? is hard to describe. It's sort of folk and sort of mellow and sort of trippy. Alopecia is a really good album, but it starts off a little too loud to be good ambient background noise.
Alternately, you could always just fire up your internet radio player of your choice and stream Bluemars or Cryosleep ZBC or any number of other ambient radio station for a couple of days.
Goth-Trad, the Mad Raver's Dance Floor album. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jHxPpxMZ4qc
Don't let the names fool you, it's some interesting stuff. Might not be your cup of tea, but it's a sound I haven't heard much of.

I always love seeing Trip Hop mentioned, but I'm gonna venture a guess that Portishead may not be the best option for him if he is looking for positive music.
The other bands are alright though.
Also, the Nine Inch Nails album Ghosts is good background music.

This too. Don't let the NIN label dissuade you. It's rather minimalist, with a few more uptempo bits. Nothing like Trent's other work.
Any request for electronic music should be immediately investigated at di.fm. I can only vouch for the Trance channel, which is probably not what you want. But they have channels called "Minimal", "Ambient", and "Chillout" that may work for your purposes.
This might be too far in to the hippy dippy new age day spa kind of ambient, but I really like putting on the 'DroneZone' station under Ambient in iTunes radio. It's tonal/textural/atmospheric/soundscapey stuff.
Posts
For example:
Godspeed You! Black Emperor? WAY too depressing.
Perfect album for the background while doing random stuff.

Ambient Techno
Trip Hop
This. Selected ambient works Vol II is also good, but more creepy.
Also, Ziggy Marley, while not my favorite Marley, is uniformly easy and positive. Might be good if the weird stuff gets too weird.
Boards of Canada
Infected Mushroom
Explosions in the Sky
Tycho
That last one is not related to PA. http://tychomusic.com/
Enjoy your trippy inside hangouts.

Cafe del Mar are good too, but Le Cafe Abstrait is far superior.
edit: Both are downtempo / ambient collections.
This is excellent.
