Nerdgasmic, play late night TF2 with us sometime. Me, WeX Majors, Buttcleft, and a few others just pick a server and dick around for a few hours doing whatever. Heavy boxing matches are not uncommon.

I always seem to miss these types of games, but they are my favorites.

What time/time zone do these normally happen?

it's pretty remarkable how well this game integrates a team though

like if this were straight every-man for himself deathmatch I would get my ass handed to me but as part of a team I can focus on defending a point or indirectly helping my team in various ways without exposing my retarded ways too much

it's probably the best fps I've ever played

or the one I've enjoyed the most, anyway

having firmly defined classes really helps with this because it gives everyone a basic idea of what they're supposed to do

They're a whole lot less firmly defined than they used to be though.

once you get into the unlockables, yeah

but a person brand new to the game is going to see those nine classes divided up into three groups and go "yep, I have an idea of what I'm going to do here"

and I think most of the classes still kind of stay in their niche even with the new stuff (the demoman as a melee class is a pretty drastic change, yeah, but even if you give a medic a kritzkrieg his first priority should be healing people)

yeah, this makes me pretty excited for Lead And Gold

I hope that has the same sort of equal parts fun class-based gameplay and silliness

it looks promising from what I've read

I read a preview for Lead & Gold which made it seem like TF2+cowboys. Made it sound like a pretty cool game.

I haven't really read up on this game. What does it do that TF2 doesn't, beyond the setting?

    Much like The Batsignal
    The Horn Of Urgency
and a giant monster stomping through downtown Angel Grove...

    DID SOMEONE SAY PUNCHING HEAVIES?!

Punching Heavies is a god damn fucking blast in a fucking half. It is the most fun kill you will ever get in the entire god damn game because not one damn person can question it.
    There's nothing cheap
    Or Easy.

YOU JUST GOT YOUR FUCKING HEAD PUNCHED IN!

You can't argue that. There's nothing to argue. Your screen is currently showing this
    SOLDIERButtcleftislookinggood_0007.jpg

Also, this isn't just our "Late Night Dickaround" Sessions I'm talking about. If you're playing a heavy in a normal match and you come in singing some Communist Propaganda Anthem, people know flat out you're insane and to run in the other direction or shoot everything they can at you. You're giving up way too much as a normal heavy to be wading into battle with just boxing gloves.

Now that business has been settled, THREAD! I missed you! Here's some celebratory screenshots fitting tonight's theme!

you are part of the problem

That's usually when I start keeping track.

If I spend two lives, which as a Heavy waddling into battle is ALOT of time, getting a normal kill from someone I'll take notice.
Because I will NOT let them get a Nemesis kill simply because they have no Honor.
Although I'm interested in seeing how often this would happen in a normal game now.
Soldier, Demo, Scout, Medic, Spy, hell even Engie all have at this point a viable melee option in game. The only ones that have a problem are Snipers and Pyros. They need another weapon out in order for them to get a melee kill effectively so I'll usually not get mad at them as long as the active weapon was an axtinguisher or Kukiri.

Cause then if they kill me, hey great. Good Job. But if I manage to punch their head off their shoulders

what makes you say snipers and pyros are worse at melee battles than engies, spies, or scouts

i suppose he means that under certain circumstances spies, engineers, and scouts can melee-ruin your day with a backstab, a crench, or the sandman

snipers and pyros need to use another weapon to butter up their target first before they get their extra damage

    Nuzak on
  • redheadredhead Registered User regular
    edited December 2009
but if he's talking about people being "honorable" and pulling out their weapon for a melee fight when they see him coming, backstabbing and the sandman don't apply

also the fireax and kukri are identical to the wrench?

  • AneurhythmiaAneurhythmia Registered User regular

Well, spies have a 358 degree backstab detection area. Scouts have movement and attack speed and double jump, though those may be disadvantages depending on the person, along with reduced damage. Sandman is also a toss-up.

I guess he's thinking most pyros use axtinguisher, which sucks without fire, but sniper melee is on equal footing with most other melees even without jarate.

edit: Responded without refreshing. Oh well.

To clarify: When you're trying desperately to start up Melee Fortress (something which I'm sure isn't that hard anymore thanks to the update.) you get very hesitant to go after a Pyro who has his Thrower out
"This fucker ain't gonna switch, he's just gonna burn my fat ass to a cinder." With a sniper it's different usually because really, if you got that Jarate out...what else you gonna do with it? That's getting thrown at me and he's gonna have a really big knife out in half a second.

Essentially, unless you know who that Pyro/Sniper is, there's no real way to tell if they're gonna get what it means to be coming at them with boxing gloves on.
"I could have mowed you down 5 seconds ago and 15 feet away from here. COME! PLAY WITH ME!"
