episode one / steam issues

alrighty... so armed with the information from the reply to my last post, I downloaded steam, purchased the holiday edition of HL2 and burned the whole caboodle to dvds. I trucked them over to my gaming machine, copied it all over, and it wouldn't work, so i just bit the bullet and spent an evening getting it online again, activated steam, put it in offline mode and all is well.

however.

Half life 2 runs great, half life: source runs great, Lost Coast runs great, episode one will not start... it gets to the loading screen with the tower and stormy clouds etc, and then kicks me to desktop saying "Half-Life 2 is required to run mods" and then some memory error.

It runs fine on this shitty internet machine i moved it from though, so i'm thinking i must have borked something in the moving process, but i've spent about 5 hours now looking for it, and i can't find it for the life of me, just thought i'd throw this out there to see if anyone has heard anything about similar problems.

oh and i have googled the error and every permutation of it i could imagine, and i've registered at the steam forums, but they're taking forever to activate my acount so i can't ask there!

tl:dr = wtf does "Half-Life 2 required to run mods" mean when you've got half life 2, half life:source, Cs source, Lost Coast etc etc running fine?

I believe in angels, not the kind with wings, no...not the kind with halos, the kind who bring you home
